Hoquiam’s second-half surge burns Stevenson, 35-14

Friday Night Football Roundup

Grizzlies 35, Bulldogs 14

STEVENSON — Erupting for 29 unanswered points beginning late in the second quarter, well-balanced Hoquiam pulled away from Stevenson in a non-league game Friday night at Stevenson.

Artimus Johnson rushed for 240 yards on 27 carriers and scored two touchdowns, while quarterback Gregory Dick passed for 175 yards and one TD as the Grizzlies improved to 2-1 overall.

Plagued by penalties and one critical interception, the Grizzlies trailed 14-6 late in the second quarter.

“We shot our toes a bunch of times in the first half,” HHS coach Rick Moore said. “We were moving the ball, but we would get holding, push-in-the-back (penalties). It was hard to get any continuity.”

Dick’s 11-yard touchdown run and Johnson’s conversion run with 1:03 remaining lifted the Grizzlies to a 14-14 halftime tie.

They took a permanent lead midway through the third quarter when Dick found Jerod Steen on a 69-yard scoring pass. Johnson broke a 56-yard TD run later in the quarter and tallied again on a 5-yard run in the fourth quarter.

Naz Mazariegos kicked three conversions.

“Our defense played well throughout,” Moore said. “The offense came out in the second half moving the ball and not stopping (themselves).”

Hoquiam’s Jackson Folkers and Ryan Espedal intercepted passes and were credited with fine defensive performances. Chewy Muro and Matt Brown were also cited for fine defense.

The Grizzlies return home Friday to face La Center.

Bulldogs 42, Rockets 0

CASTLE ROCK — Dakoyta Reninger scored the first of his four touchdowns on the second play from scrimmage, igniting unbeaten Montesano past Castle Rock in non-league action Friday at Rocket Stadium.

Reninger hauled in a slant pass from quarterback Trevor Ridgway on about the Montesano 40-yard line and took it the distance to complete a 69-yard scoring play with the game only 48 seconds old.

The junior running back later scored on an 11-yard run in the first quarter, a 4-yard run in the second quarter and a 7-yard pass from Ridgway at the 8:25 mark of the third period. The latter TD triggered the 40-point running clock mercy rule.

Carson Klinger scampered 14 yards for a touchdown and Nathan Olson added a 6-yard scoring run in the second period for the Bulldogs, who led 35-0 at the half.

“I just like the effort we’re getting from the kids,” Montesano coach Terry Jensen said. “We’re young and we’re still making mistakes, but our effort has been outstanding all three weeks. I thought our defense played their best game of the season.”

Carson Klinger led the Bulldogs (3-0) in both rushing with 70 yards on 10 carries and tackles with 10. Ridgway passed for 158 yards, while Reninger amassed 110 yards in total offense.

Montesano played turnover-free ball while coming up with four takeaways. Ridgway and Nick Chapman intercepted passes and Ridgway and Hayden Klinger recovered fumbles.

The Bulldogs return home Friday to face Rochester.

Wildcats 32, Cardinals 28

WINLOCK — Hayden Hoff’s 2-yard touchdown run with 6.7 seconds remaining gave Ocosta a dramatic victory over Winlock in a non-league football game Friday night at Winlock.

The Cardinals rallied from a 24-7 deficit to own a 28-24 lead in the late going. But Kalvyn Scott blocked a Winlock punt, with Paris Silver recovering, to set up Ocosta on about their own 40-yard line in the closing moments.

Matthew Hart’s 34-yard pass to Noah Martin gave the Wildcats (2-1) first down on the Cardinal 6-yard line. With his team out of timeouts, Hoff punched it in on fourth down.

Complete statistics were unavailable, but Hart ran for one touchdown and threw for two more — on passes to Dereck Thomas and Kobe Beck.

Beck also recorded a safety when he tackled a Winlock ball-carrier in the end zone. He was cited for exceptional play on both sides of the ball.

“Our defense is much improved,” Ocosta coach Brian Snell said. “Our tackling was much better than it has been and our fight, our grit (was crucial). We made some big plays when it mattered.”

The Wildcats will be idle next week before opening SWW 2B Coastal Division play at home against Pe Ell-Willapa Valley on Sept. 30.

Hyaks 14, Ducks 0

TOUTLE — Scoreless after three quarters, this non-league contest turned when North Beach put together two sustained, clock-eating drives in the fourth quarter en route to the victory over Toutle Lake on Friday night.

After getting the ball following a Toutle Lake punt in the opening seconds of the fourth quarter, the Hyaks marched 85 yards on 16 plays for the first touchdown of the game — a 7-yard scoring run by Tavo Muro. On the ensuing kickoff, Toutle Lake fumbled and North Beach recovered.

Nine plays and 50 yards later, Muro ran in from 15 yards out for the final touchdown of the game. Muro ran for 103 yards on 13 carries and two scores, while Marcus Pope led the Hyaks (2-1) with 168 yards on 33 carries.

“We have young kids who are maturing,” North Beach head coach Todd Bridge said. “We had three turnovers in the first half. With the 2 1/2-hour bus ride, we started playing football after halftime. Coming back at halftime after struggling, we began playing Hyak football. There are very positive signs. They’ll be ready to go by the time league play begins.”

Pope, offensive lineman Diego Gonzalez and nose guard Seth Bridge were cited for their overall contributions for the Hyaks, who had four turnovers lost and a minus-3 turnover margin in the contest.

On Friday, North Beach stays home to take on Kalama.

Titans 36, Vikings 0

MOSSYROCK — Kaelin Jurek rushed for 134 yards and four touchdowns as Pe Ell-Willapa Valley blanked Mossyrock in a non-league game Friday night at Mossyrock.

Jurek, who carried 17 times, scored PWV’s first three touchdowns on a pair of 1-yard runs and a 2-yard blast. He broke a 21-yard TD run in the third quarter after the Titans assumed a 29-0 halftime lead.

Tyler Justice had a 1-yard TD run and also ran for a conversion for PWV (2-1). Jurek caught a conversion reception and Tyson Nissell kicked a pair of PATs.

Ever Gutierrez rushed for 53 yards for the Titans. Nissell led PWV tacklers with nine stops, while Matt Minton had seven tackles. Brad Prestegord, Michael McCoy and Nissell also recovered fumbles for the Titans.

Pe Ell-Willapa Valley hosts Toledo on Friday at Menlo’s Crogstad Field.

Mules 34, Indians 14

CATHLAMET — Seizing the momentum by scoring a last-second touchdown that ended the first half, Wahkiakum pulled away from South Bend in a non-league contest Friday night at Cathlamet.

The Indians (2-1) had trimmed the deficit to 13-8 on A.J. Sanchez’s 12-yard touchdown run and Ben Byington’s conversion run with 1:05 remaining in the first half.

The Mules, however, drove the length of the field and completed a 12-yard touchdown pass with one second left prior to intermission.

“That was kind of the dagger,” South Bend coach Tom Sanchez said.

South Bend’s other touchdown came on Byington’s 9-yard pass to A.J. Sanchez in the fourth quarter.

Sanchez rushed for 83 yards on 13 carries. Josiah Markwell led Tribe tacklers with 14, with Byington contributing 10 stops.

“We really struggled against the run defensively and they kind of took it to us,” Coach Sanchez said.

South Bend hosts Mossyrock on Friday.

Blackhawks 62, Chitwhins 14

BELLINGHAM — Top-ranked Lummi walloped Taholah in a non-league game Friday.

Details were not reported. The Chitwhins (1-2) will be idle next week before making their first home appearance on Sept. 30 against Oakville.
