BRUSH PRAIRIE — Breaking things open in the second half, Class 2A power Hockinson thumped Hoquiam in a non-league game Friday at Hockinson.
Although trailing all the way, the Class 1A Grizzlies (4-4) kept things respectable against the state’s second-ranked team for a half.
With Naz Mazariegos kicking a 21-yard field goal, Hoquiam trailed 28-3 at the half.
The Grizzlies, however, fumbled inside their 20-yard line on their opening possession of the third quarter. The Hawks quickly converted to ignite a 20-point third quarter.
“They’re a lot bigger and faster than we are and their quarterback is one of the better quarterbacks we’ve ever seen,” Hoquiam coach Jeremy McMillan said.
Hoquiam’s Payton Quintanilla was cited for his play on both sides of the ball. McMillan also praised Chewy Muro and Jonah Doll for defense.
The Grizzlies host Forks in a battle for the Evergreen 1A League’s second-seeded district berth next Friday.
