Henrie-Weisel trophy stays in Raymond

Seagulls edge South Bend by two points to win Tri-District meet

The trophy for the top track team in Pacific County will stay in Raymond as the Seagulls edged South Bend by two points to claim victory in the Henrie-Weisel Tri-District Meet at Raymond High School on Thursday.

Led by the Seagulls boys team, which scored a meet-best 76 points, Raymond totalled 123 points total, two points better than South Bend. Willapa Valley placed third with 82 points.

“We had a number of kids step up in events to help the team out and try to get the win,” Raymond head coach Mike Tully said. “Overall, I’m proud of the effort the kids put in. They really wanted to keep the trophy, and they pulled it off.”

Raymond had held the trophy, which honors former Raymond coach Jim Henrie and former South Bend coach Don Weisel, for all eight seasons it has been awarded.

Tully acknowledged the performance of Seagulls thrower James Robinett, who won the boys shot put with a mark of 42 feet, two inches — a two-and-a-half foot improvement over his previous personal best — to help lead the Seagulls boys team to a six-point victory over South Bend.

“He’s been on the verge of breaking 40 feet for awhile, so it was nice to see him break through,” Tully said, adding that all of Raymond’s shot putters, both boys and girls, set a personal best at Thursday’s meet.

South Bend, which won nine of the 17 events, was led by sprinter Preston Lawhead. The Indians’ senior won the 100, 200 and 400 meter events and also ran the anchor leg the South Bend’s victorious 4×400-meter relay team.

Logan Stamos also won multiple events for the Indians, claiming victories in both the 300-meter hurdles and the triple jump.

Willapa Valley’s Nathan Franks won the 3,200 meter race and teammate Kyen Phansisay took the gold in the javelin, both with personal-best marks.

In the race for a girls team title, Willapa Valley won eight of 17 events to score 63 points, beating second place South Bend by 12 points.

The Titans’ Hannah Cook won 400 and took first in both hurdles races to lead Willapa Valley.

Cook was joined by teammates Brooke Strozyk and Hailee Layman as multi-event winners for the Titans.

But arguably the most impressive performance of the meet came from Willapa Valley’s Brooke Friese, who set a PR-mark of 10-06 in the pole vault, which stands as the top mark in the 2B class this season.

South Bend was led by senior sprinter Hannah Byington, who won the 100, 200 and long jump to lead the Indians to a second-place finish.

Byington nearly won four events, but was edged out by Raymond Kyra Gardner in the long jump.

Speaking of Gardner, the Raymond freshman was the only Raymond girl to win multiple events, taking the aforementioned long jump to go along with her victory in the high jump.
