Grizzly girls use long ball to beat Aberdeen

Hyde and Dunn homer as Hoquiam beats Bobcats, 7-4

Any concerns about Hoquiam’s softball hitting has thus far been unfounded.

Turning on the power for the second time in four days, the Grizzlies outslugged Aberdeen, 7-4, in a non-league contest Thursday at John Gable Park.

ReyLynn Dunn and winning pitcher English Hyde each homered and combined for five RBIs for the Grizzlies (2-0). Reagan Glanz homered for the Bobcats (2-2).

Grizzly coach Keith Reynvaan had listed hitting as his team’s biggest question mark entering the season. But, following a lopsided win over Black Hills on Monday, six of his team’s nine hits on Thursday went for extra bases.

“We hit the ball well but they took a few away from us, too,” Reynvaan said. He was referring primarily to Aberdeen’s Angel Jones, who made several fine catches in center field.

Glanz’s two-run shot, to right-centerfield, in the top of the fifth inning forged a short-lived 4-4 tie.

The Grizzlies regained the lead a half-inning later. Maya Jump worked Bobcat pitcher Jalyn McDaniel for a leadoff walk, went to third on Jade Cox’s single to right and scored on Kamimi Papp’s infield out.

Dunn followed Hyde’s leadoff double in the sixth with a two-run homer to right-center that gave Hoquiam some insurance.

Hyde retired the final seven batters to collect the victory. She finished with eight strikeouts.

The senior pitcher provided some of her own support with a three-run HR to center in the second inning. That enabled the Grizzlies to overcome an early 2-0 deficit, fashioned when the first four Bobcats reached base in the first.

“The one concern I have is the first inning,” Reynvaan said. “That was a problem for us for the first two games. We’ve got to come out more focused.”

Aside from what he described as a couple of mental errors, Aberdeen coach Scott Wilson was also happy with his own team’s performance in a well-played game contested in surprisingly mild weather at traditionally windswept Gable Park.

“We’ll clean up some things and we’ll be all right,” Wilson said.

Leadoff batter Tamara Corona had two hits for the Bobcats. Wilson cited the pitching of McDaniel and the defensive play of Jones in center and Glanz behind the plate.

The Grizzlies journey to Centralia today. The Bobcats will be idle until March 23, when they host Elma.
