GIRLS BASKETBALL

Grizzlies 51, Spartans 32

Hoquiam came out of the locker room and turned up the intensity to outscore Forks by 10 points and run away with this Evergreen 1A League contest at Hoquiam Square Garden on Friday.

The Grizzlies (2-5, 6-11) held Forks to just 12 points in the second half.

“The third quarter was the difference,” Hoquiam coach Mark Maxfield said. “We came out very aggressive, attacking the rim and we shot 13 free throws in the quarter and totally shut them down in the second half. We really played solid man defense.”

Maxfield cited the efforts of seniors Izzy Hernandez, Brandi Parson and Casey Mode. Hernandez scored nine points, while Parson added seven points. Hernandez and Mode each had double figure rebound totals in the game.

Kylee Bagwell led the Grizzlies with 11 points.

Hoquiam will travel to Aberdeen today.

“(Chehalis) just shot the ball well,” Aberdeen coach Jeff Niemi said. “We did a pretty good job handling their press, we just couldn’t convert when we did. We caught them on a bad night of us not shooting well and them shooting well.”
