Hoquiam used superior depth to top Aberdeen 158 to 169 at Highland Golf Course on Tuesday.

Hoquiam used superior depth to defeat rival Aberdeen in a non-league match at Highland Golf Course on Tuesday.

The Grizzlies carded four scores of 42 or lower to talley a total of 158 and best Aberdeen’s 169.

“We have been working on our game and this is a special group,” Hoquiam coach Larry Dublanko said. “There is a really good work ethic in these kids and they want to compete. Whenever we can play in the 150s we are happy with that.”

While the weather played no obstacle, sanded greens placed a few bumps in the paths of the golfers.

Hoquiam’s John Sand played through illness and took medalist honors with a 35, while his teammate Ryan Cole set a goal to break 40 and finished with a 39.

Aberdeen was led by a 39 from Brendan King. King lipped out an eagle on No. 17 and a birdie on No. 18, but played solid throughout to come away with the low number for the Bobcats.

“We are really proud of them,” Aberdeen coach Dan Sundstrom said. “Every match they are getting better. We dropped 19 strokes from playing the same course in the jamboree. After the first four golfers came in, we had them on the ropes, but you have to give it to Hoquiam because they have superior depth. We are still looking for a No. 5 and No. 6 golfer.”

Sundstrom cited King and Jaxson Larson for continued improvement.

Hoquiam hosts Seton Catholic on Thursday at Highland, while Aberdeen plays host to Centralia at Grays Harbor Country Club on Friday.
