Elma wins third-straight league title

Elma edged Montesano to claim its third-consecutive 1A Evergreen League title at the league-championship meet on Thursday at the Tumwater Valley Golf Course.

Eagles standouts in junior Olivia Moore and senior Sophia Hamilton tied atop the leaderboard with identical scores of 86 over 18 holes of golf.

Elma eighth-graders Kyla Rudy (110) and Mercedes Carter (112) rounded out the Eagles’ team score of 394, which was three strokes better than second-place Montesano (397), which handed Elma its first loss in three seasons on Tuesday, May, 6.

“Today was a beautiful day at Tumwater Valley and there was a lot of great golf played today across all teams,” Elma head coach Alexis Keating said. “I am so proud of how hard the girls have worked this season and excited for them to start the post season on Monday.”

Monte was led by seniors Jessie LaLonde (90) and Maggi Kupka (92), who placed third and fourth, respectively.

LaLonde’s score was a personal-best for an 18-hole round while Kupka matched her previous best over 18-holes.

Bulldogs sophomores Lucy Scott (101, 6th) and Ashley Hill (120, 13th) rounded out Monte’s top four scores.

Hoquiam placed third overall with 449 strokes, led by senior Molly Gundersen, who placed fifth with a score of 96.

Grizzlies senior Cora Bisher also placed in the top 10, finishing seventh with a round of 106.

The 1A District 4 Championships will be held on Monday and Tuesday at the Tumwater Valley Golf Course, with 13 state-tournament berths at stake.

Montesano 192, Elma 199

Montesano handed Elma its first 1A Evergreen League loss in three seasons with a 192-199 victory on Tuesday at the Oaksridge Golf Course in Elma.

Monte’s Maggi Kupka led the way with a new personal-record 9-hole score of 42, including a birdie on the fourth hole to lead the Bulldogs..

Jessie LaLonde (48), Lucy Scott (50) and Ashley Hill (52 PR) rounded out Montesano’s top four.

Elma was led by star junior Olivia Moore, who earned Medalist honors with a score of 40.

Sophia Hamilton (47), Amaya Lewis (56) and Mercedes Carter (56) completed Elma’s score.
