Hoquiam 51, Morton-White Pass 44

Hoquiam opened its Raymond New Year’s Tournament with a 51-44 victory over Morton-White Pass on Friday at South Bend High School.

”I don’t remember the last time our girls have won a game at the Raymond Tournament over the years,” said Hoquiam head coach Chad Allan, whose team had to rally in the fourth quarter after leading by nine after the first period of play. “This was a challenging game against a relentless and fierce Morton-White Pass team. Proud of our team for finding a way and everyone played a part.”

Hoquiam (5-3 overall) took a 23-14 lead after the first quarter thanks to six points apiece by guard Katlyn Brodhead, forward Aaliyah Kennedy and post Sydney Gordon.

But the Timberwolves (3-4) responded by outscoring the Grizzlies 24-14 over the second and third quarters to take a 38-37 lead into the final eight minutes of the game.

The Hoquiam defense stepped up in the fourth quarter, holding MWP to six points while the Grizzlies went 6 of 6 from the free-throw line – four by Brodhead down the stretch – to earn the victory.

Three Grizzlies scored in double figures, led by Brodhead with 14 points.

Gordon (13 points) and guard Lexi LaBounty (11 points) also scored in double figures for Hoquiam.

The Grizzlies went 18 for 54 from the field (33.3%) and outrebounded MWP 41-32, with Gordon, Kennedy and Avery Howard grabbing 10 boards apiece.

Olympia 53, Montesano 37

Montesano lost to 4A-class Olympia 53-37 on Friday at a holiday tournament in Adna.

Tied at 8-8 in the first quarter, Monte (4-4) fell behind at the end of the first frame and saw the Bears (8-1) pull away with a 16-5 second period.

“Second quarter they kind of took it to us,” Bulldogs head coach Mark Mansfield said.

Monte played near even with Olympia in the second half – being outscored 20-19 – and cut the Bears lead to 10 with approximately three minutes left to play in the game.

“I was real proud of our effort in the second half,” Mansfield said. “We lost some intensity and energy in the second quarter when Olympia extended the lead, but the girls really battled in the second half.”

Jillie Dalan led the Bulldogs with 19 points and seven rebounds.

Monte shot 12 of 47 from the field (25.5%) and 8 of 16 from the free-throw line (50%).

The Bulldogs outrebounded the Bears 26-21, with Ava Schrader also grabbing seven boards for Monte.

Capitol 54, Elma 28

Elma fell to Capitol 54-28 in a non-league home game on Friday.

The Eagles (1-4) trailed by 11 after the first quarter of play and never found enough offense to get back into the game, hitting 11 of 54 shots from the field (20%) as a team.

Trailing 25-17 at halftime, the Eagles scored 11 points on 4-of-27 shooting (14.8%) in the second half.

Elma post Olivia Moore scored 16 points to lead the the Eagles.

Elma hosts Rochester in a 1A Evergreen League game at 6:45 p.m. on Thursday.
