EUGENE, Ore. — Visiting Grays Harbor College erased a 17-point second-half deficit to knock off host Lane College in the opening round of the Dale Bates Crossover Tournament on Friday afternoon.

The Chokers (3-3) led 47-45 at the half, but were slow to come out of halftime. The Titans bolted out before GHC spent the final 12-plus minutes to catch them and pass for the win.

“It was just hard-nosed defense,” GHC head coach Alonzo Cole said. “We went into a 2-3 zone and minimized their presence in the paint. Their shooting wasn’t great behind the arc and we kept them out of the paint. It was a total team effort.”

Jamari Thomas and Jordan Phillips led the Chokers with 16 points each, with Malik Redmond adding 12 points. Trevion Cotton blocked five shots and Jared Jackson pulled in nine rebounds.

Cole cited both Cotton and Jackson for their efforts in the second half.

Today, GHC will take on Umpqua College in the tournament semifinals.

WESTPORT — Karley Reidinger’s basket as time expired gave South Bend a dramatic victory over Ocosta in a Pacific League game Friday at Westport.

South Bend led for much of the contest, but Erika Snider’s 3-point basket with eight seconds remaining gave Ocosta a 40-39 lead.

A South Bend shot in the waning seconds missed, but Reidinger came down with the rebound and scored on the putback at the buzzer.

“We still have some things we have to improve on. But the fight we had in that game was the thing that made me the proudest,” South Bend coach Gary Wilson said. “Everybody who was in the game contributed to that win.”

South Bend’s Jessica Sanchez had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. She also swiped four steals.

Ashley Pearson added 10 points and Reidinger nine points and eight rebounds for the Indians (2-1, 2-2). The Tribe survived a 2-of-14 performance from the foul line.

Ocosta’s Snider and Kristi Raffelson shared game scoring honors with 19 points apiece.

“We just weren’t clicking tonight. We battled hard, but it didn’t seem like we were quite in the (game),” Ocosta coach Jason Barnum said. “I give props to South Bend. They hung in there and gave themselves a chance to win the game at the end.”

The Wildcats (2-2, 3-2) visit Winlock today for a 2 p.m. varsity-only affair. On Tuesday, South Bend travels to Chief Leschi.
