Raymond kept its perfect league record intact with a 57-40 victory over Chief Leschi on Friday in Raymond.

Led by big offensive nights from its top two scorers, Raymond (10-1 overall, 6-0 2B Pacific) shook off a slow start en route to a 34-20 halftime lead.

The Warriors (6-3, 3-3) — which started the game on a 9-0 run — responded after the half by outscoring the Seagulls 14-10 in the third quarter. But Raymond’s defense held Chief Leschi to just six points over the final eight minutes of the game to remain unbeaten in league play.

“Our defense the whole game really set the tone to give us momentum,” Raymond head coach Jason Koski said. “As in the previous three games after our return from COVID shut down, our team struggled putting the ball through the hoop. Proud of our resiliency and ability to continue to play through our own adversities.”

Ninety-one percent of Raymond’s scoring came from its two most electrifying players in senior Kyra Gardner and freshman Karsyn Freeman, which combined to go 17-for-34 (50%) from the field and score a total of 52 points.

Gardner led the way with 30 points, 10 rebounds, four assists, four steals and three blocks.

Freeman scored 22 points to go along with four rebounds (all on the offensive glass), three assists and two steals.

Senior Izzy Silvernail was the only other scorer for Raymond with five points on the evening.

The Seagulls, which entered the game ranked No. 2 in the WIAA RPI 2B class rankings, play at Toledo High School at 5:45 p.m. on Monday.

Winlock (8-7) shot 55% on 24-of-44 shooting from the field — including 11 3-pointers — to hand Willapa Valley (5-7) the loss.

“They are fast and long and we are not really that big,” Willapa Valley head coach John Peterson said. “In the first half we were in there, but they blasted us in the third quarter.”

Winlock’s Addison Hall scored 34 points to lead all scorers.

Willapa Valley was led by senior Lanissa Amacher, who scored 16 points and “played really well,” according to Peterson.

Vikings sophomore Lauren Emery scored six points in her first varsity start as Willapa Valley’s Ana Chavez was unavailable due to COVID.

“We just got to keep our eyes on the prize and keep grinding,” Peterson said of the non-league loss. “Proud of the kids. They battled and remained positive.”
