The Bulldogs (1-1 overall) got off to a rough start, falling behind 5-1 after four errors led to a five-run second inning for the Warriors.

But in the top of the fourth, Monte responded with a pair of runs on an Isaac Pierce double.

The Bulldogs responded with three runs the following inning, taking the lead on a Christian Olsen sac fly to score freshman Christian Morris to put Monte up 6-5.

Monte added a run on a fielder’s choice groundout in the sixth and erupted for six runs in the seventh, highlighted by run-scoring singles from Pierce, Bode Poller and Morris.

Four minutes later, Monte doubled its lead when Jiovanny Torres scored and rounded out the scoring at 3-0 when Romero scored on a shot from outside the 18-yard box in the 68th minute.

“We looked promising,” Montesano head coach Fidel Sanchez said of his team’s first outing of the season. “We’re young and fast and the kids have a different energy that last year.”

Tumwater 3, Aberdeen 2

Montesano nearly knocked off last season’s league champs, falling 3-2 against Tumwater in a 2A Evergreen Conference matchup on Friday in Aberdeen.

The Bobcats (1-1-1, 0-1 2A Evergreen) played without senior co-captain Kaleb Myers (illness) and were further hampered when senior co-captain Logan Sias went down early with a knee injury and did not return to the pitch.

Aberdeen took the early lead when midfielder Julian Garcia sent the ball to forward Miguel Martinez, who rocketed a shot past the keeper for a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute.

Tumwater (3-2, 2-0) closed out the half with two goals off a free kick and a corner kick to take a 2-1 lead into halftime.

Aberdeen opened the second half with a goal on an Edwin Quintana header off an Alan Avalos free kick to tie the match.

In stoppage time, a ball that skipped off an Aberdeen defender at the edge of the penalty area was deemed an intentional hand ball, giving Tumwater a penalty kick, which was converted to hand the Bobcats the 3-2 loss.

“Even with our team banged up and missing some key players, we gave ourselves a great chance to win and it was unfortunate that we lost in the manner that we did,” Aberdeen head coach Larry Fleming said. “It definitely seemed like it was an unnecessary penalty, but there is nothing for us to do except get back to work at practice and beat them the next time.”

Aberdeen defenders Avalos, Javier Garcia and Isaiah Johnson and senior forward Daniel Garcia were cited by Fleming for their play on Friday.

Also on Friday, Aberdeen’s JV team won 1-0, with Juan Serrano scoring the lone goal.

Aberdeen is scheduled to play Centralia at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
