Grizzlies sweep Spartans

FORKS — Hoquiam defeated Forks 7-3 and 5-4 in an Evergreen 1A League doubleheader on Friday.

The Grizzlies (3-2, 3-4) were able to get hits right when they needed them in the first game, knocking hits to score four runs in the fourth inning.

In the nightcap, the two teams traded runs in the first four innings, with Hoquiam’s Payton Parshall coming up with a big hit for the Grizzlies, scoring two runs on a triple in the second inning.

“They were both well-played games by both teams,” Hoquiam coach Keith Reynvaan said. “They only walked two in two games so we had to earn everything we got. Our defense was very solid tonight.”

Reynvaan cited Parshall for her play.

Hoquiam hosts Montesano on Tuesday.

Bulldogs 14, Cougars 2

SILVERDALE — Allyssa Gustafson and Samantha Stanfield each homered as Montesano trounced Central Kitsap in a non-league contest Friday at Silverdale.

Gustafson’s two-run shot highlighted a six-run Bulldog first inning. Winning pitcher Stanfield added a solo shot in the fourth.

Katie Granstrom drove in four runs with a double and a single for the Bulldogs (10-1).

Montesano capitalized on six errors and 10 walks.

“We really took advantage of their weaknesses,” Bulldog coach Pat Pace said. “Both teams looked like they hadn’t played on dirt in a while.”

Chelsi Howard, Matti Ekerson and Lexi Lovell each homered in a 20-2 Montesano JV triumph.

Montesano is scheduled to visit Hoquiam on Tuesday.

Wolves 5, Bobcats 3

TUMWATER — Black Hills withstood a late Aberdeen rally to edge the Bobcats in an Evergreen 2A Conference game Friday at Tumwater.

Limited to two hits through six innings, the Bobcats (2-3, 2-4) trailed 5-0 entering the seventh.

Following a leadoff walk, the Cats strung together singles by Katie Hammonds, Jillian Swor, Camryn Cook and Sierra Hammond to put the potential tying run aboard with one out. A fly ball and infield out, however, ended the contest.

Four Aberdeen errors produced three unearned Black Hills runs.

”We went from 19 hits against Tumwater to six hits today,” AHS coach Scott Wilson said. “We need to be able to hit the ball and we need to play defense.”

Wilson praised the pitching of Jalyn McDaniel.

Weather permitting, the Bobcats host Chehalis on Monday.

Eagles 12, Beavers 2

ELMA — Elma rallied for seven runs in the fifth inning to roll to victory over Tenino in six innings during an Evergreen 1A League game on Friday.

The Eagles (2-5, 3-7-1) bats came alive late in this contest. Elma’s Cody Williams and Jon Yates each drove in two runs with Williams hitting the games lone home run. Alex Youckton kept the Beavers off the base paths allowing just two runs.

“We put the bat on the ball today, we only had one strikeout,” Elma head coach Todd Baun said. “We played good fundamental baseball.”

Baun cited Youckton, who pitched the entire game for Elma, and catcher Carter Jacobson for their efforts.

Elma hosts Montesano on Tuesday.

Spartans 4, Grizzlies 3

FORKS — Starting pitcher Chance Wilson held visiting Hoquiam to just three hits as Forks parlayed two two-run frames to win this Evergreen 1A League contest on Friday afternoon.

Freshman Kyle Larsen drove in two runs for the Grizzlies, who led 2-0 midway through the contest before the Spartans tied it in the bottom of the fourth and took the lead in the fifth.

Walker Dunn, Hoquiam’s starting pitcher, took the loss, walking three and striking out one.

“We have to find some kind of spark,” HHS head coach Steve Jump said. “I thought Garrett (Bradley) and Walker pitched fine, but we need to give them run support.”

Jump cited his three freshmen — Larsen, Liam Odell and Joel Emery — for their contributions.

On Tuesday, Hoquiam (3-3, 4-5) hosts Tenino.

Monarchs 11, Bulldogs 4

LONGVIEW — Dawson St. Jean’s two-run homer capped a six-run first inning that ignited Mark Morris past Montesano in a non-league game Friday at Longview.

The Bulldogs (6-3) were guilty of six errors, although none of those came in first. The Class 2A Monarchs did all their scoring in the first three frames.

“The first couple of innings, we just weren’t ready to play,” Monte coach Mike Osgood said. “Once we settled down, we played with them. We just couldn’t get out of the hole we created.”

Sawyer Rhoden delivered three hits, including a pair of doubles, to pace the Bulldog attack. Osgood also cited the relief pitching of Mason Lutz, Payson Parker and Dakoyta Reninger.

The Bulldogs return to Evergreen 1A League game Tuesday at Elma.

Wildcats split with Titans

PE ELL — Pe Ell-Willapa Valley edged Ocosta 5-2 in the first game, while the Wildcats slugged past the Titans 17-7 in the nightcap of a non-league doubleheader on Friday.

PWV (7-8) was able to post four runs in the third inning of the first game, while Ryan Shepherd kept the Wildcats off the bases to help lift the Titans to victory.

“We were hitting the ball and just not finding any holes,” Ocosta head coach Mike Allton said. “Defensively we came out pretty flat and we had a couple of errors that led to runs.”

In the second game, it was Ocosta with the one big inning. The Wildcats were able to post 12 runs in the fourth inning of the nightcap and took the game via 10-run mercy rule in five innings. Sam Quinby and Jayden Matthews each had an RBI single and an RBI double in the fourth inning.

“We did a better job of putting the bat on the ball and were a little more patient at the plate,” Allton said. “We did a good job of capitalizing on our opportunities, especially in the fourth inning.”

Allton cited Quinby and Matthews for their performance at the plate as well as Brandon Harnden for his relief pitching in the first game.

Ocosta travels to take on the Montesano JV on Monday.

Warriors 8, Bobcats 4

Rochester came from behind to defeat Aberdeen in an Evergreen 2A Conference game at Ken Waite Field on Friday.

The Bobcats (0-5, 1-7) were able to manufacture four runs early in the game, but the Warriors came back to score four runs in the sixth inning and controlled the game the rest of the way.

“We’re making mistakes that we shouldn’t be making so I have to reevaluate and go back and make sure we are doing the things right,” Aberdeen head coach Shon Schreiber said.

Aberdeen hosts Tumwater today.

Kalama Twilight Invitational

KALAMA — Montesano finished with a handful of top 10 finishes and a number of personal best performances on both the girls and boys side at the Kalama Twilight Invitational on Friday.

The Bulldogs placed sixth as a girls team with 58 points, seven ahead of the host Chinooks, but well behind the boys and girls champion Evergreen of Vancouver. On the boys side, the Bulldogs placed eighth with 38 points.

“Overall, it was a pretty good meet for us,” Montesano coach Doug Schupbach said. “We had some sunshine and it was good to run in.”

Montesano’s Jordan Spradlin scored the only two individual wins for the Bulldogs, throwing a season best distance of 129-1 in the discus and topping the field with a distance of 43-1 1/2 in the shot put.

Shayla Floch finished second in the high jump and fourth in the long jump, while Hannah Barre ran a personal best time of 13.07 to finish second in the 100.

Also posting personal bests on the girls side were Lindsey Hutchings in the 3,200, Elizabeth Peterson in the 1,600 and Carly Spradlin in the shot put.

On the boys side, Jake Mustard finished third in both the 1,600 and 3,200 with personal best times in both events, while Bryce Whipple placed third in the triple jump with a distance of 39-5. Whipple also placed sixth in the long jump and 10th in the 100.

LJ Valley bested he personal record by three feet to finish fourth in the shot put with a distance of 42 feet. Lyle Burbidge placed fifth in the 110 hurdles with a time of 17.33.

Montesano hosts Tenino and Castle Rock on Thursday.

C.C. Baseball

Titans sweep Chokers

At Olympic Stadium, Tacoma College no-hit Grays Harbor in the first game and limited the hosts to just one hit in the second game to register an NWAC Western Region doubleheader sweep, 11-0 and 15-0, on Friday afternoon.

In the opener, Nate Packard struck out eight and walked four to get the seven-inning no-hitter for Tacoma (10-1, 17-9). Ryan Eddy got the start for GHC (0-11, 1-26) and took the loss in two innings of work, walking five.

In the nightcap, Cole Lester got the Chokers’ lone hit of the day with a single in the second inning. Tacoma starter Garrett Westberg picked up the win, striking out five and walking one in four innings of work.

Today, both teams return to action for another doubleheader, this time at Tacoma.

C.C. Softball

Red Devils sweep Chokers

KELSO — At Tam O’Shanter Park, Lower Columbia no-hit Grays Harbor in the first game and used the final two innings of the nightcap to roll by the visitors in an NWAC South Region doubleheader sweep, 8-0 and 10-2, on Friday.

In the opener, LCC’s Jessica Gibson struck out four and walked one for the five-inning no-hitter.

In the nightcap, GHC’s Ulalia Soa slugged a home run in the third inning to tie the game at 1-1. Emily Anglin gave the Chokers (0-14, 1-19) the lead in the fourth when she scored on an infield error. LCC finished the game by scoring nine unanswered runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

Today, Grays Harbor College will take on Chemeketa College in Salem, Ore.
