Hoquiam’s chance at a 1A Evergreen League title got a bit tougher after a 62-47 loss to Tenino on Friday at Hoquiam Square Garden.

Foul troubles and poor shooting led to Hoquiam’s second straight 1A Evergreen League loss. Hoquiam shot 35.5% from the field on 21-of-59 shooting and committed 21 fouls, leading to Tenino hitting on 15 of 21 free throws (71.4%).

Hoquiam (8-3, 1-2 1A Evergreen) played well in the first quarter, jumping out to a 25-19 lead led by 18 points — including four 3-pointers — from senior guard Michael Lorton Watkins.

But the Grizzlies would never regain that form throughout the rest of the game, scoring just two points in the second quarter and 22 points over the final three periods of the game.

Hoquiam’s defense held Tenino (8-2, 2-0) to six points in the second period to hold on to a 27-25 lead at halftime.

Tenino’s offense heated up in the second half as the Beavers fed sophomore guard Noah Schow, and the strategy paid dividends. Schow attacked the basket and got to the free-throw line, scoring 23 of his game-high 33 points — including going 9 of 11 from the charity stripe — over the final 16 minutes of the game.

Hoquiam, meanwhile, struggled to score in the second half as Tenino outscored the Grizzlies by 17 points over the final 16 minutes of the game.

“We just couldn’t get anything going,” Hoquiam head coach Jeff Niemi said. “We just fouled way too much and were not finishing on offense. … It was just a tough night, offensively, and we’ve got to find a way to play tough defense without fouling.”

Lorton Watkins led Hoquiam with 22 points and scored four points after an explosive first-quarter performance.

Senior Justice Stankavich scored 13 points for Hoquiam, which shot just five free throws in the game as a team, converting one.

The Grizzlies host Hoquiam in a non-league game at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.

BOYS PREP SWIMMING

River Ridge 111, Aberdeen 64

The Aberdeen boys swimming team couldn’t capitalize on a strong start against host River Ridge on Thursday, falling to the Hawks in a Class 2A non-league dual meet at River Ridge High School.

Junior Eli Olson and sophomore Denny Linker won the first two individual events for the Bobcats (0-3 overall) before the Hawks flew off with the top spots in the remainder of the dual meet. Olson won the 200-yard freestyle, while Linker cruised to a win in the 200 individual medley. Olson took second in the 500 freestyle and Linker was second in the 100 free later in the meet.

“Coming out of the winter break, this was a strong effort and showing for the Bobcats today,” Aberdeen head coach Rob Burns said. “The team is finally healthy and ready to go. The Hawks had more depth than us and it showed in the results. Regardless, I am very happy with the team’s performances and overall competitive spirit.”

Sophomore Jacob Hallak turned in solid performances in the 200 IM and the 100 backstroke, while freshman Zeke Olson was strong in the 50 free and 100 breaststroke. The coaches also cited Tyson Powell (200 & 500 free), Zach Parker (200 IM and 100 butterfly) and Austin Weiss (100 back) for their performances.

On Tuesday, Aberdeen hits the road again, this time at Evergreen 2A rival Shelton for a league dual meet.
