Bulldogs 56, Beavers 22

MONTESANO — Senior post Jordan Spradlin led all scorers with 32 points and 12 rebounds to lead Montesano past Tenino in this Evergreen 1A League contest on Friday.

Playing for the first time in eight days, the Bulldogs needed time to shake off the rust. The offense came inside, led by Spradlin, and the defense followed to shut down the Beavers.

“We were a bit rusty from the layoff; I thought the kids played hard,” Montesano head coach Julie Graves said. “Our outside shots didn’t fall.”

Josie Talley pulled down six rebounds and Katie Granstrom came off the bench to pull down four rebounds in the fourth quarter. Cheyann Bartlett and Josie Toyra also dished out four assists each.

On Tuesday, Montesano travels to Elma.

MENLO — Four players scored in double figures as Raymond beat Willapa Valley in Pacific League play Friday at Tenoski Gym.

Mikayla Collins led Raymond’s balanced attack with 15 points. Cydney Flemetis tallied 14 and Aubree Gardner and Winter Newman 12 apiece for the Gulls (7-1, 10-2).

“They shot quite well in the first half and played good solid defense and limited us to a lot of one-shot possessions,” Valley coach Colby Rogers said of the Gulls. “Raymond is a seasoned, well-coached team. Our team put up a fight. The more we play them, the better we’ll get.”

Freshman Katie Adkins came off the bench to top Willapa Valley with 14 points. Hannah Cook contributed 10 points, nine rebounds and five assists for the Vikings (1-7, 4-8).

Willapa Valley hosts Life Christian on Tuesday. Raymond is idle until Jan. 14, when it also is home against Life Christian.

Fishermen 67, Indians 41

SOUTH BEND — League-leading Ilwaco pulled away in the second half to beat South Bend in a Pacific League game Friday at Koplitz Fieldhouse.

The Indians (3-6, 4-8) were within striking distance at the half, trailing only 28-19. The Fishermen, however, cashed in on turnovers in a 25-point third quarter that settled the issue.

“This was our second game in two nights,” South Bend coach Gary Wilson said. “I have to take my hat off to these girls. They played hard all the way through.

Mackenzie Kaech paced Ilwaco with 22 points.

Karley Reidinger, 7-of-15 from the field, topped South Bend with 17 points. Jessica Sanchez came close to a triple-double for the Tribe, finishing with 11 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists.

The Indians journey to Naselle on Wednesday.

BROOKLYN — Christin Saavedra scored 18 points as Lake Quinault downed North River in a Coastal League game Friday at Brooklyn.

Saavedra also had eight rebounds and six steals. Katlynn Neeland had 12 points, nine steals and five rebounds for the Elks (2-2, 4-4).

“We had to get used to the small court there,” Quinault coach Chris Christiansen said. “Once we got used to it, we just ran with it.”

“Quick passing and great anticipation netted many high percentage shots for the Lady Elks,” North River coach Sean Pierson said. “We had a difficult time getting the same looks due to Quinault’s impressive zone defense.”

Alliyah Schreck scored eight points for the Mustangs (0-4 in league).

Quinault hosts rival Taholah on Tuesday. North River hosts the Hoquiam C squad on Thursday.

MATLOCK — Nettie Grover led all scorers with 11 points and eight rebounds and Tamika Grover added 10 points and seven rebounds to lead Taholah past Mary M. Knight in Coastal 1B League play on Friday.

The Chitwhins’ offense matched their defense, which held the Owls to single-digit scoring in the first three quarters. Denise Dolan nearly completed a double-double, finishing with 10 points and nine steals.

Taholah head coach Karl Braden cited Tamika and Nettie Grover and Denise Dolan for their performances.

On Tuesday, Taholah travels to rival Lake Quinault.

“We played no defense and ran no offense,” Wishkah coach Dave Busz said. “But I have to compliment (Naselle), their defense totally suffocated us.”

Naselle’s Taylor Ford led all scorers with 26 points.

Jesse Thompson had two points and seven rebounds for the Loggerettes (2-1, 5-3).

MATLOCK — Zach Cain’s 22 points paced Taholah past Mary M. Knight in a Coastal League game Friday at Matlock.

Cain also contributed 10 rebounds, seven steals and four assists.

“He was really active,” Taholah coach Mike Rose commented.

Brett Orozco added 19 points, Jason Mowitch 13 points, five assists and four rebounds and Levi Jackson six rebounds for the Chitwhins (3-0, 8-1).

Hitting five 3-point shots in the first half alone, the Chitwhins owned a 51-19 advantage at intermission. Much of the second half was played under the 40-point running clock mercy rule.

The Chitwhins visit rival Lake Quinault on Tuesday.

MONTESANO — Montesano’s transition offense was fed by its pressure defense and Tenino turnovers in this Evergreen 1A League contest on Friday.

Sam Winter led all scorers with 13 points, five assists and five steals for the Bulldogs (1-0, 7-5). Trevor Ridgway added 10 points and five steals and Nick Chapman scored 10 points.

“We were able to get up quickly,” Montesano head coach Doug Galloway said. “We put pressure on them and that led to early steals and opportunities for us. We did a good job of pushing the bal up and created turnovers.”

On Wednesday, Montesano travels to rival Elma.

BROOKLYN — David DeLaCruz’s long-range shooting helped Lake Quinault top North River in a Coastal League game Friday at North River.

DeLaCruz knocked down 6-of-8 shots from 3-point territory in leading all scorers with 21 points. Anthony Ramirez added 20 points and 17 rebounds for the Elks (2-2, 2-6).

“We were hitting a lot of our shots,” Quinault coach Christian Garcia noted. “We were 50 percent (9-of-18) on threes.”

Murray Cottrell had seven rebounds, five assists and four steals while playing turnover-free ball for the Elks.

Luis Nieves had 18 points and Nat Baughman 14 points for North River (1-3 in league)

“Lake Quinault’s shooting was far superior to ours and gave them a comfortable lead going into the half,” Mustang coach Sean Pierson said. “We had a more respectable second half of play, but the damage was done.”

The Elks host rival Taholah on Tuesday. On Thursday, North River is home against the Hoquiam C squad.

The Comets led 51-8 at the half.

“They pressed us and got a lot of easy baskets off their press,” Wishkah coach Stefanie Baltzell said. “They played really well and we really struggled. We had a difficult time bringing it up the floor.”

OLYMPIA — At Westside Lanes, Aberdeen ran into a very experienced bowling team in Olympia in this non-league dual meet on Friday afternoon.

The Bears swept the Bobcats in all five competitions, with Olympia’s Justina Dizon bowling a 199 in the first game and a two-game 386 series.

Aberdeen’s Annabelle Micheau led the Bobcats with their highest game of the day at 123 in the second game and two-game series at 228.

“Our girls bowled better than last time, which is good,” AHS head coach David Bruncke said. “The only thing we can control is our scores. If the other team throws a 750 in a game, so that’s good for them. We aren’t at that level yet, but we’re working hard.”

On Wednesday, Aberdeen will open at home against Timberline at Rainier Lanes.
