Led by championships from Bates and Troeh, Bobcats place second in state championship meet

Led by state championship performances from Tyler Bates and Andrew Troeh, the Aberdeen boys track and field team took second place overall at the WIAA 2A State Track & Field Championships on Saturday at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma.

Aberdeen scored 51 points over the three-day meet, one point better than third-place Bellingham and two points better than fourth-place Squalicum, to place second overall to Sehome (88 points) out of 40 2A schools competing at the meet.

Bates won the discus title earlier in the week with a throw of 162 feet, five inches while Troeh won the 2A boys high jump title by clearing 6-04, a new personal-best.

The two state champs had help as the Bobcats’ depth proved to be the difference in earning the team’s first state placement since the 1960’s, according to school officials.

Aberdeen had three third-place finishes, including Troeh, who took third in the triple jump with a mark of 41-01.50.

Collin Babineau took third in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.58 seconds while teammate Julian Campos completed his impressive prep career with a third-place state medal in the 3200, crossing the finish line with a personal-record time of 9:19.91 seconds.

Campos also placed fourth in the 1600 with another PR time of 4:16.49.
