Shelton Invitational

SHELTON — Five Twin Harborites captured titles in the prestigious Shelton Invitational track meet Saturday at Highclimber Stadium.

Three of the titles in the all-classification field came from Class 2B tracksters.

Raymond’s Karlee Freeman, the reigning state champion and all-classification state leader in the girls discus, won that event with a throw of 148-7. Although late-afternoon rain and a slick ring dictated a cautious approach in that event, she finished 32 feet ahead of her nearest rival, North Beach’s Nannette Fruh.

North Beach’s Tawni Blankenship broke her own school record by clearing 11 feet in the girls pole vault. Peninsula’s Madison Grande was a distant second at 9-6.

Hyak sprinter Lorin Cox won the girls frosh 100 meters in 13.79.

Hoquiam senior Devin Merksick cleared 6-4 to take the boys high jump. He wound up two inches better than River Ridge’s Joshua Kennedy and North Thurston’s Donovan Fenwick.

Willapa Valley’s Hallee Layman nabbed the girls frosh shot put with a throw of 30-2.

Fruh was the only runner-up among the Twin Harbors contingent, but Aberdeen’s Faith Cardenas was third in the girls 400 with a personal-best time of 59.5. Mary M. Knight’s Kaylee Sowle tied for third in the girls high jump.

Raymond’s Jimmy Thepsoumphou established a career-best with a 6-foot high jump.

“We took six and four brought home medals (for top-six finishes),” Raymond coach Mike Tully said. “Overall, I thought the kids did a really good job and competed well.”

BELLEVUE — Montesano senior Jordan Spradlin earned the Female Field Athlete of the Meet award at the Bellevue Christian Invitational on Saturdy.

Montesano’s Shayla Floch went 5-2 to take the girls high jump.

Although those were their only titles, the Bulldogs used their depth to fare extremely well in team competition. Montesano’s girls were third and the boys fourth in a huge field. Fife swept both team titles.

“Extremely pleased,” Monte girls coach Doug Schupbach said. “We didn’t even take a first on the boys side and still finished high. We had a lot of great performances by our kids.”

Three Bulldogs — Seth Dierkop, L.J. Valley and Cole Bradbury — surpassed 40 feet in the boys shot put. Schupbach also commended the performances of Lyle Burbidge, Sam Winter, Jake Mustard, Trevor Ridgway and Logan Clements among the boys.
