Elks 11, Rebels 8
JOHNSON BAYOU, La. — Murray Cottrell drove in three runs and Anthony Demarco doubled twice as Lake Quinault opened its southern baseball road trip with a win over Johnson Bayou, La.
The Elks (2-3) led most of the way and withstood a late Rebel rally.
“It was definitely a fun game,” Lake Quinault coach Keith Samplawski said. “We were able to hit the ball quite a bit and were able to sub a lot.”
The latter could be an understatement. Two Elks, Allen Espinoza and Brennan Theel, wound up playing all nine positions.
Johnson Bayou is located on the Gulf of Mexico about 90 minutes from Houston. Lake Quinault’s hosts treated the team to fishing, crabbing and a huge Cajun feast, complete with jambalaya and gumbo.
The Elks toured New Orleans and the ship USS Alabama on Thursday. Weather permitting, they were scheduled to wind up the baseball part of their trip by facing Waterloo, Ala., on Friday.
