District Girls Soccer: Ocosta, Hoquiam eliminated in loser-out matches

Pirates 2, Wildcats 0

CENTRALIA — Playing without fear, Ocosta produced one of its best performances of the season, but couldn’t crack Central 2B League champion Adna in the District IV 2B semifinals at Tiger Stadium in Centralia on Tuesday.

Ocosta’s season comes to an end at 9-9.

“It was the most physical we’ve played all year,” Ocosta head coach Mike King said. “We had nothing to lose. We were the fourth seed playing the top team in the state. They’re older, more physical and faster. There was not a single girl who didn’t play well for us tonight.”

The Pirates led, 1-0, at the half on an eighth-minute goal from Devanie Kleemeyer. Kleemeyer scored in the 55th minute for the second and final goal of the match.

“We held them to just 19 shots for the whole game,” King added. “We’ve given up 50 shots to them in each (league) game, so that’s an improvement. We didn’t have any good chances. We had three shots at the end, but no good opportunities.”

Coach King cited his entire team, adding, “We’re the youngest team in the state, so we have nothing but growth potential (going forward).”

Cougars 2, Grizzlies 0

CAMAS — Hoquiam held Seton Catholic scoreless in the first half, but a quick second-half goal by the Cougars pushed the Grizzlies into a defensive posture they couldn’t escape from in a District IV 1A first-round, loser-out match at Doc Harris Stadium in Camas on Tuesday.

Hoquiam’s season comes to an end at 7-10.

Tied at 0-0 at the half, Hoquiam had chances in the first half to surprise Seton Catholic, but couldn’t connect.

The Cougars connected two minutes into the second half and kept the pressure on the Grizzlies throughout the rest of the contest.

“The first goal just handcuffed us mentally,” HHS head coach Drew Grannemann said. “They played a long-ball game. A couple of times, we pushed our line too high and didn’t get back fast enough.

“It has been a great season,” Grannemann added. “I’m happy with how it turned out and we improved every week, which has been our goal. We can only get better from here.”

Grannemann cited Casey Mode for several crosses for chances throughout the game and goalkeeper Jade Cox for key saves in the match.
