Compton, Kanahele share MVP of Coastal League

1B Coastal League announces Boys/Girls Basketball All-League Teams

In a season stacked with talent, Mary M. Knight’s Isaiah Compton and North River’s Kainoa Kanahele were named co-MVPs as the 1B Coastal League announced its boys and girls basketball all-league teams for the 2021.

Both Compton and Kanahele’s numbers were eye-catching this past season.

Kanahele averaged 17.1 points, 12.8 rebounds and 3.2 steals per game for the 7-4 Mustangs while Compton averaged a double-double with 19.8 points and 14.5 rebounds per game for the 9-5 Owls.

Compton was joined by Owls teammate Dylan Ralph (16.8 ppg) on the First Team.

League champion Taholah (11-4 overall, 8-2 league) was well-represented on the all-league list, with both Izaiah Mowitch and Jauvon James-Juneau garnering First Team honors.

Mowitch led the Chitwhins with 17.5 points per game to go along with 9.1 rebounds per game in his senior season.

James-Juneau was equally impressive, averaging a double-double with 14.5 points and 14.1 rebounds per game to go along with 3.6 steals per game.

Taholah’s Tommy Underwood (15.5 ppg, 3.9 spg) was named to the league’s Second Team and was just one point shy of the First Team in an incredibly close vote among the league’s top seven players.

North River head coach Sean Pierson earned Coach of the Year honors with the Wishkah Valley Loggers claiming the Sportsmanship Award.

The girls all-league team was led by Oakville’s Maria Casihan, who won the MVP award by two points over North River’s Eliza Gumaelius.

League champion Taholah (12-4, 8-0) was represented on the First Team by leading scorer Nakeah McCrory, who finished her junior season scoring 10.3 points and grabbed 7.3 rebounds per game.

The First Team was rounded out by North River’s Launa Delaney, Ruby Gumaelius and Wishkah’s Brooke Haskey.

Taholah’s Ashley Hidalgo, Precious Cross Guns, Oakville’s Cierra Berg and Mary M. Knight’s Kaylee Ruggles were named to the league’s Second Team.

North River’s John Gumaelius was named Coach of the Year with Mary M. Knight and Oakville winning the Sportsmanship Award.
