SOUTH BEND — Ben Byington rushed for 175 yards on 10 carries and scored three touchdowns as fast-starting South Bend trounced Chief Leschi on Friday night at Millam Field.
The Indians put up 36 points in the first quarter. Ben Byington had touchdown runs of 12, 40 and 19 yards.
Drew Rose threw a 40 yard touchdown pass to Raul Mora and a 41 yard pass to Byington. South Bend closed the scoring in the first with a safety by Josiah Markwell to make the score 36-6 at the end of the first quarter due to a missed extra point.
Preston Lawhead rushed for a touchdown in the second and Mora returned an interception for a touchdown to make it 50-6 going into the third. Rose finished the scoring for the Indians with a third quarter rushing touchdown with the final score coming to 56-16.
South Bend head coach Shane Byington noted the performance by Byington and Rose on offense and Markwell on defense. Rose finished the game four of five passing for 81 yards and two touchdowns.
“Those guys played a couple quarters then we got the JVs in a lot, so were pretty happy,” Byington said.
“Our overall team focus,” Byington said when asked the highlight of Friday night’s game. “You know the kids really spend the week preparing and working hard. Our overall team focus, as a coach, I’m very happy with.”
The Indians (2-0) host Wahkiakum (2-0) on Friday.
