Willapa Valley 58, Ocosta 41
Willapa Valley completed a perfect league season with a 58-41 win over Ocosta on Friday in Menlo.
The Vikings (18-2 overall, 8-0 1B Coastal) jumped out to a 14-6 lead after one quarter and held off the Wildcats (13-5, 5-2) the rest of the way to earn the Senior Night victory.
Blane King led Valley with 20 points, 14 in the second half to lead the Vikings to victory.
“Blane King was fantastic on both ends of the floor,” Valley head coach Derek Rask said. “His jump shooting in the second half was huge.”
Senior guard Nathan Fluke added 13 points while Lucas Lusk led Valley with 11 rebounds.
Ocosta head coach Jason Quinby said rebounding was a factor in his team’s loss.
“Tonight, I thought we moved the ball around better than our first game with Valley, but the main difference in the game tonight was Valley rebounded and we didn’t,” he said. “Normally, we average between 15-20 offensive boards a game and tonight we had nine, and only had 24 for the game total where we normally average 47. We did OK on the turnovers, but just couldn’t secure enough boards to limit Valley to one shot. As a result, they had way too many good looks that offensive boards present.”
Jesus Agramon had 12 points and six assists to lead Ocosta.
Luis Solis added 11 points, eight rebounds and four steals for the Wildcats.
With the win, Valley locked up the 1B Coastal League crown and the league’s No. 1 playoff seed.
“We hosted Senior Night this evening and honored the two seniors in our program, Nathan Fluke and Aiden Sliva. They have positively impacted our program and team, and we fully appreciate all of their contributions. We will certainly miss them as they graduate from our program at the end of the season,” Rask said. “Not only was this a great Senior Night, but we were able to solidify the league title. I’m really proud of our team. They truly earned this accomplishment and we are ready to continue our success in the district tournament coming up.”
Ocosta sits in second place and can lock up the No. 2 seed with a win over Naselle at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 8 in Naselle.
