Bobcat girls come up short vs. Rochester

A break from challenges to Evergreen 2A Conference powerhouses brought Aberdeen’s girls little relief.

Alexis Jones-Sederberg scored 28 points as Rochester notched its first league victory by topping the Bobcats, 77-59, in a league contest Friday night at Sam Benn Gym.

Coming off decisive losses to league leaders Black Hills and Chehalis, the Bobcats (0-3, 1-12) probably saw Friday’s game as winnable in their bid to claim one of the league’s four district berths.

The Cats actually performed respectably enough on the offensive end, with three players scoring in double figures.

But they were unable to keep the young but tall Warriors (1-3, 5-9) off the offensive glass or the foul line.

In addition to producing numerous second-chance points, Rochester hit 26 of 41 free throws.

“That’s the ball game,” said Aberdeen coach John Yonich, who did not dispute the notion that most of his team’s fouls in this exceptionally physical game were legit.

“I think the girls were tense. They knew how important this game was,” he continued. “We’re going to make some changes on defense and give some different looks. (Rochester’s) got a nice little team.”

The Bobcats led only once, when Aliyah Tageant put in a rebound for the game’s opening basket.

The Warriors responded with a 12-2 run and steadily pulled away.

Down 38-25 at the half, the Bobcats pressed the Warriors into some turnovers but never came closer than 12. Jones-Sederberg tallied nine points in that period as Rochester took a 59-40 advantage into the final period.

Senior forward Reagan Glanz paced the Bobcats with 17 points — 16 of those in the second half. Teammate Angel Jones added 14 points, but received two technical fouls and was ejected early in the fourth quarter.

Tageant was effective around the hoop throughout with 12 points and Ryder Heikkila barely missed double figures with eight points.

The Bobcats travel to Centralia on Tuesday.
