Bobcat boys, girls notch sweep in wrestling

Aberdeen boys top Hoquiam; girls edge Centralia

It was a good day for Aberdeen wrestling as the boys and girls teams took home victories at their dual meets on Thursday.

The girls pulled off a dramatic 42-36 victory over Centralia when Tatum Heikkla pinned Jakayla Shipe in the third round to win the deciding match.

The boys also pulled out a 42-27 win over Hoquiam with key victories from Bodie Wharton and Edgar Salazar.

Aberdeen’s girls went into the last mach tied with Centralia at 36 as both teams traded pins heading into the heavyweight match of the night.

The matchup between Heikkila and Shipe was just as close as the dual between the two teams. Heikkila came back from down two points to tie the match at eight apiece but Heikkila continued to be aggressive as time ticked away in the third round.

Fighting through an ankle injury she sustained the second round, Heikkila got the pin in the waining seconds of the third round to secure the decisive win.

Even though she was in position to win on points, Heikkila said she wasn’t satisfied just winning by decision.

“I was trying to get the pin. I always go for the pin,” she said. “I just learned a new move yesterday and I tried that out when I did the final pin. It worked out for me so I think I’ll use it again.”

Including a forfeit, the Bobcats won the last four matches. They got wins from Savannah Chandler, MacKayla Waltee in the comeback but head coach Craig Yakovich said his team still has some things to clean up early in the season.”

“We had some sloppy transitions in matches that we could have won but all in all I think the effort was there,” he said. “We’re always trying to finish so we put ourselves in bad places sometimes.”

Aberdeen and Hoquiams’s boys team didn’t quite come down to the wire but the Bobcats weren’t able to pull away until the last few matches of the evening.

A number of forfeits boosted the scores on both sides but the matches that did take place were highly competitive.

Both sides wrestled girls at 113 pounds. Faith Cardenas won a spirited match against Alexis Delahanty 4-3, to get the Bobcats off to a good start.

Salazar also came up with a 9-5 win over Malaki Eaton.

Bobcat coach Jimmy Martin said he expected the outcome to hinge on a few matches and was really glad that Angel Cisneros could come away with a pin after moving up a weight class.

“They did really, really well. I really liked what the young kids did,” he said. “It was cool to see Angel get that pin at 145 since we bumped him up. He lost to that kid last year so it was some good revenge for him. We really needed hat pin since there were a couple of matches we had top win.”

Brady Cummings and Keegan Montgomery scored pins for the Grizzlies.

Hoquiam head coach Terry Helland was disappointed with the result but thought his younger wrestlers showed signs of promise.

“Aberdeen’s a really tough team but we got some positives,” he said. “We had some guys who were getting their first dual matches of the year and they looked sharp. Even when they were making mistakes they were recovering well.”
