MENLO — Brady Collins broke a pair of 50-yard punt returns for touchdowns to spark Adna past Pe Ell-Willapa Valley, 35-14, in a non-league football opener Saturday afternoon in broiling heat at Crogstad Field.
The Titans trailed only 15-14 until Collins reeled off his pair of scoring runbacks, both in the third quarter.
With Max Smith’s pass from punt formation to Ryan Shepherd the key play, PWV drove to the 6-inch line midway through the final period. But officials ruled that a Titan ball-carrier had not broken the plane of the end zone — a call disputed by Titan coaches — before fumbling on the next play, with Adna recovering.
“Essentially, school was out because it an emotional backbreaker for us,” PWV assistant coach John Peterson said.
Collins took a 9-yard scoring pass from Conner Weed with 4:51 remaining to complete the scoring.
Titan quarterback Matt Pearson hit Shepherd on a 61-yard scoring pass in the second quarter and later scored himself on a 2-yard run with 24 seconds records in the first half. Pearson passed to Kaleb McCalden for the 2-point conversion after the first TD.
Peter Hamilton led PWV rushers with 125 yards on 21 carries. Hamilton also made 13 tackles, one fewer than teammate Tyson Nissell and two more than Cub Bair.
“You’ve got to give Adna credit. They’ve got a good team and they’re experienced and we’re not,” Peterson said. “(Our) kids did some good things. In all the years I’ve coached, it’s the worst conditions I’ve ever seen. It was 97 degrees and there wasn’t a hint of wind.”
The Titans face the Morton-White Pass combine Friday at Randle.
