Aberdeen wins fourth straight district girls swimming team title

OLYMPIA — Depth is a big help for when you want to retain your District IV 2A girls swimming team title, because Aberdeen knows this all too well.

Even though the Bobcats won just two events, they overloaded all 12 events with swimmers in the consolation and championship final heats en route to their fourth straight district championship win at The Evergreen State College pool on Saturday afternoon.

Aberdeen finished with 578 1/2 points and outpaced Columbia River, which finished second at 372.

The top-three finishers in each event automatically qualified for the state 2A championship meet, set to be held on Nov. 11-12 at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.

“Although Columbia River had nine first-place finishers out of the 12 events, our depth gave us the decisive advantage,” AHS head coach Jan Simons said. “The girls swam hard. It was a total team effort.”

Kayleia Sias won the 100 backstroke final, while Aberdeen’s 200 freestyle relay team — Annike Eisele, Katie Lewis, Karli Heikkila and Emily May — won the event easily with a state-qualifying time.

Aberdeen finished with a slew of individual state qualifiers — Annika Eisele 200 IM and 100 fly; Emily May 200 free and 100 back; Karli Heikkila 50 and 100 free; Kayleia Sias 100 fly and 100 back; Katie Lewis 500 free; Mari Rabung 100 breast; and, Marithess Lang, diving.

Team: Aberdeen 578 1/2, Columbia River 372, Tumwater 258, Black Hills 250, Mark Morris 175.
