FEDERAL WAY — Aberdeen freshman Anna Weber was the top qualifier in the 100-yard breaststroke on the opening day of the state Class 2A Swimming and Diving Championships on Friday at the King County Aquatic Center.
Lowering her own school-record time with a 1:05.11 mark, Weber qualified more than one second faster than top-seeded Abby Russell of Liberty of Issaquah.
The finals are scheduled for tonight.
Weber’s breaststroke was one of three school-record times the Bobcats registered Friday. She also established a school mark of 2:02.79 in the 200 freestyle, although it was only the 10th fastest qualifying time.
The top eight swimmers advanced to tonight’s championship finals, while the next eight will compete in the consolation finals.
Aberdeen’s Kayleia Sias also broke a school record in the 100 backstroke at 1:00.97. She qualified fifth in that event.
The Bobcats qualified second in the 200 medley relay, with Weber and Sias joining Mackayla Waltee and Karli Heikkila in that event. Their 1:54.43 time trails qualifying leader North Kitsap by about three seconds.
Also advancing to the championship finals were Sias in the 100 butterfly (eighth in 1:02.58) and the 200 free relay team of Heikkila, Katie Lewis, Melissa May and Sias, seventh in 1:45.62.
Nearly every Bobcat participant bettered their pre-meet seeding time.
“The girls did really fantastic,” Aberdeen coach Jan Simons said. “Every single Aberdeen swimmer just swam their heart out. The girls are pretty motivated to swim well tomorrow as well.”
Aberdeen swimmers competing in the consolation finals included May, who qualified 15th in the 200 IM, Heikkila, 14th in the 100 freestyle, and the 400 free relay team of Heikkila, Lewis, May and Weber, which barely missed a championship final berth by qualifying ninth.
