Friday Football Roundup: Raymond’s second-half burst slays Mules

Gulls 27, Mules 6

RAYMOND — Erupting for 27 unanswered points in the second half, Raymond upended previously unbeaten Wahkiakum in a non-league game Friday at Raymond.

Unable to convert several scoring chances, the Seagulls (2-2) trailed 6-0 at the half. They scored on their first possession of the second half, however, on Patrick Edwards’ 20-yard TD run.

It remained tied at 6-6 following a missed conversion. But the Gulls forced a Wahkiakum punt and put together another sustained drive, capped by quarterback Kason Koski’s 1-yard scoring run.

The Gulls settled matters on Koski’s 18-yard scoring run and Jace Duckworth’s 52-yard TD burst in the fourth quarter. Reese Garcia kicked the final three conversions.

“In the first half, offensively we were doing OK,” Raymond coach Luke Abbott said. “Offensively, we would have somewhat of a decent drive, then (have) penalty after penalty. We’d drive and couldn’t finish.

“At halftime, we made a few adjustments,” Abbott continued. “We knew things would work offensively…We had to execute. They followed through, they heard every word (we said). I’m hoping for the rest of the season, we can put four quarters together.”

Abbott praised the play of backs Koski, Duckworth and Edwards and the defensive work of Koski and Luke Hamilton.

The Gulls open league play Friday at home against North Beach.

Knights 49, Eagles 13

VANCOUVER — Unbeaten King’s Way Christian scored 49 successive points in trouncing Elma in non-league football action Friday at Vancouver.

The Eagles (0-4) actually scored first, when Ira Hartford broke an 80-yard touchdown run with the game only 13 seconds old. Alejandro Hernandez’s conversion gave Elma a 7-0 lead.

King’s Way, however, answered with three TDs in the next 8 1/2 minutes, then made it 27-7 when Luke Hoffman went the distance on a 41-yard run on the final play of the quarter.

It was 36-7 at the half and 49-7 at the three-quarter mark.

Hartford’s 9-yard TD run at the 9:05 mark of the fourth quarter closed out the scoring.

As has been their habit this season, the Eagles performed better in the second half, even against King’s Way starters.

“We’ve just got to execute better, we’ve got to be more disciplined,” Elma coach Ron Clark said. “We moved a lot better and ran the ball decently in the second half. They were an extremely athletic team.”

Hartford rushed for 197 yards on 27 carries. He was cited by Clark for a fine performance, as was running mate Tatium Brumfield and receiver Levi Spalding. The latter was making his season debut after recovering from a broken hand.

The Eagles return home Friday to face Rochester.

Chinooks 28, Hyaks 12

OYEHUT — It was the tale of two halves for North Beach as Kalama came from behind to score 21 unanswered points and come away with a victory in this non-league contest at Lt. Jim Davis Field on Friday.

After North Beach (2-2) rushed for 175 yards in the first half, the Chinooks (2-2) ground down the Hyaks in the second half to limit them to just 42 yards.

“The first half was North Beach and the second half was Kalama, just their half was bigger than our half,” North Beach coach Todd Bridge said.

It took North Beach just five offensive plays to score with Tavo Muro breaking a 43-yard run for a touchdown for the early 6-0 lead, but Kalama answered with a 65-yard run by Jacob Herz to go up 7-6.

The Hyaks put together a 12-play drive in the second quarter to take back the lead. Muro ran in from a yard out to give North Beach a 12-7 lead at halftime. However that would be the last score for the Hyaks.

While the Chinooks bottled up North Beach offensively, Kalama passed for two touchdowns in the third quarter and ran in another in the fourth quarter to overtake the Hyaks.

“I’m proud of how the boys competed,” Bridge said. “At the end of the half we stepped up and played really good pass coverage and prevented them from scoring and at the end of the game our defense stepped up to stuff their run and keep them from scoring.”

North Beach travels to Raymond on Friday.

Vikings 48, Indians 26

SOUTH BEND — Mossyrock racked up 489 yards of total offense in rolling past South Bend in a non-league game Friday night at Millam Field.

The Indians (2-2) scored on the first play of the game, when quarterback Ben Byington raced 60 yards for a touchdown. They didn’t find the end zone again until the third period, after Mossyrock had built a 36-6 halftime lead.

“Our issue is we’ve got to get stops defensively,” South Bend coach Tom Sanchez said. “They ran 70 offensive plays; we ran 39. That’s our issue. They handled us up front. That was a problem.”

South Bend’s leading rusher with 88 yards on 11 carries, Byington also scored on a 2-yard in the fourth quarter and threw a 21-yard scoring pass to Jonathan Juarez in the third period. A.J. Sanchez tallied South Bend’s other TD on a 13-yard run.

Byington also made 18 tackles. Teammate Josiah Markwell contributed 16 tackles and a fumble recovery.

The Indians travel to Ilwaco on Friday.
