A week ago, the Opinion page carried columns written by Aberdeen’s outgoing Mayor, Erik Larson, and the Rev. Sarah Monroe, who has been an advocate for the homeless and was part of a federal lawsuit against the city. They addressed this question: “How should this community respond to homelessness?”
The columns were part of a feature called You Decide, and we asked readers to comment. Many did, offering comments on our website and on Facebook. Today, we’re printing some of those responses.
We also ran a poll on our website asking: “Is Aberdeen doing enough to help homeless residents?”
The possible answers were:
• More needs to be done.
• Amount being done is adequate.
• City is doing too much.
By a large margin (68.9% as of Friday morning), most of the respondents think the city is doing too much. 25.2% said it needs to do more and 5.9% said what was being done was adequate.
In the next week or two, we’ll have a news story outlining how people can get more involved and how they can follow the story as local governments sort out what their roles and responses are.
