Vietta “Kay” Stamey Riegel crossed over on Dec. 16, 2021.

Kay was born on May 10, 1936, in Aberdeen, Washington to Mark and Vietta (nee Stewart) Stamey. Like her parents, she was active in social organizations such as Girl Scouts and the Baptist Church. On camping adventures with her family and scouts, she developed an early love for the outdoors. She enjoyed swimming, horseback riding and riflery. Kay graduated from Weatherwax High School in 1954 and maintained lifelong connections with many of her classmates.

But her primary love was helping others. From an early start collecting cans to help the war effort, Kay went on to pursue a degree in Social Work, ultimately earning her Master’s, and dedicating her life to assisting those who were struggling. During her career, she was employed as a youth probation counselor, private practice therapist and hospital social worker.

Her compassion was firmly rooted in her faith, and she was also active in a variety of Christian organizations. Raised in Baptist traditions, she ultimately found her spiritual home at The Fairview Church. She enjoyed singing in church choirs, gathering with others for Bible study and prayer; and supporting the work of missionaries and Bible translators.

Kay married Chuck Riegel in 1966 and they had two children, Janella and Kevin. After Chuck’s premature death, Kay maintained strong connections with his extended family who supported her in raising the children as a single parent. She was especially proud of her granddaughter, Zenith Savary, who is continuing Kay’s legacy as a third-generation social worker.

Kay will be remembered for her feisty spirit, sharp wit and compassion for others.
