Verna “Kay” McComb was called home to be with her Lord on April 19th, 2024 at the age of 84. Kay was born in Aberdeen, Washington on January 22nd, 1940 to Lawrence and Fern Webster. Kay was raised in South Aberdeen on Calhoun Road with her parents and two siblings, Arlene and Laurene “Rinki.” She loved growing up in South Aberdeen with her extended family, only being a short walk away on a well-travelled trail between their homes. Kay enjoyed helping her Gammie with her chickens and rabbits, but she also had an adventurous spirit with a love for climbing trees and teasing her sisters. She had an uncle she adored, Uncle Cack. In her later years, she proudly told her children how growing up with him was like growing up with Fonzie from Happy Days.

Throughout her school years, Kay proved to be a bright student and enduring friend to many. She loved acting at such a young age and participated in many school plays. She reminded us in recent conversations of her childhood plays and said she may have missed her calling, acting. She also was very involved with her Church and attending Vacation Bible Camps during her school summers.

Kay graduated from Weatherwax High School in 1958. Afterward, she took the courageous step of moving to the “big city” of Tacoma where she found employment with United Plumbing.

A few years later, on New Year’s Eve 1960, she went on a blind date with Charles McComb who she later married in 1961. Living in Lacey, Washington, they had their first two children, little Ricky and Debbie. A new career for her husband took them to Colville Washington where they put down their roots and completed their family with their third child, Sandie (Punky) in 1966.

Kay wouldn’t have it any other way, she loved being a home maker and Mama to her three children. Many in Colville knew Kay best for her various activities with the local schools, Boy Scouts, baking and especially cake decorating. Kay created the most beautiful wedding cakes which were in high demand. For school functions, her youngest daughter was the first to raise her hand saying “my mom can make cakes.” Kay also enjoyed being there for her children, every baseball game, every concert, or pep assembly, she was there to support them. Kay enjoyed family time spent at the cabin on the Little Pend Oreille Game Range, where Chuck was employed. The family spent many summers and winters traveling the back roads of the game range. This is also where she taught her children and nieces how to drive. The stories those old roads could tell.

In 1984, Kay moved back to Aberdeen to take care of her sister and mother. That concluded with a short career in the eye care industry before she became a live-in nanny to her youngest grandchild, Kelsie. It was during this time Kay became known as Bugga as this is what Kelsie chose to call her grandma. As Kelsie grew older, Kay decided to move back to Aberdeen in 2005, where she took up residence at the Leisure Manor Park in South Aberdeen. During those years she made many lifelong friends where she shared time walking the park, attending bingo night, potlucks, caroling and visiting the many garage sales. Kay was also known for clipping coupons, mainly at Safeway. Every day she would open her Safeway app and hit every single coupon so anyone using her number could save money.

Kay was a member of the United Christian Church in Aberdeen and spent much of her time volunteering at various activities within her church. She enjoyed spending time with her church family playing Bingo, Bible study, Ladies Luncheons, movie and game nights. Kay was known for always having that sparkle in her eye and her playful personality. Kay was an amazing little lady and loved by so many. She will be dearly missed and as she always said to us, we love you to the moon and back.

Kay is preceded in death by her parents, Lawrence and Fern Webster; sister, Arlene Faye Cunningham; and grandson, Josh Peters.

She is survived by her son, Rick (LaVonne) McComb of Florence, Montana; daughters Debbie (Rob) Peters of Colville, Washington, and Sandie (Tom) Thompson of Montesano, Washington; sister, Rinki French of Butte, Montana; 4 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life and potluck will be held at United Christian Church in Aberdeen with Pastor Jeff Johnson officiating on June 15, at 11 a.m. To celebrate as Kay would, wear her favorite color purple. Cremation arrangements are under the care of Harrison Family Mortuary.
