Steven L. Bowen passed away Aug. 24, 2020, in San Diego, California.

He was born Dec. 30 1950, in Aberdeen, Washington, to Herbert and Marian (White) Bowen. He attended Montesano schools, graduating in 1969. In school, he played football, basketball and baseball and wrestled.

As a teenager he worked for Pinger’s gas station then worked for Northern Pacific Railroad.

He moved to San Diego in the early 1970s and began working for A&R Roofing Co. Years later he worked for Fed Ex Ground until retirement.

Steve loved all sports. He played baseball on a men’s league, earning the nicknames Bear or Boat (short for steamboat). He coached women’s softball, winning many tournament trophies.

Whenever the Padres played the Mariners he would call his brother Dave to make a little wager.

Steve loved going to blues festivals and Over the Line tournaments. His passions included all kinds of music, tinkering with things and old cars. He favored car restoration shows as well as “American Pickers.” He had recently purchased a 1962 Studebaker, which made him beam with pride whenever he drove it.

He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren whom he adored.

He had an unbelievable memory and could recall facts on anything that happened over the years. Those conversations always started with “remember when?”

He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his wife, Rita, brothers David (Sharon) Gerard and Ted (Denise) Bowen; stepsons Coleman and Matthew (Kimberly) Mullin; grandchildren Sammy, Sydney and Sawyer; nieces Jody Sherwood and Lori Ann Hanson; nephews Matthew and Tim Bowen and numerous cousins.

He is preceded in death by his parents, brother Larry Bowen and granddaughter Taylor Mullin.

Due to the COVID pandemic a celebration of life will be scheduled for a later date.
