Steve J. Mihovilich peacefully passed away at home surrounded by his loved ones on Feb. 18, 2022. He was 94 years old and he and his wife Arlene are lifetime residents of Hoquiam. He was born to Anton Mihovilich and Karla (Rumac) on Aug. 20, 1927, in Aberdeen. He attended Weatherwax High School and lettered in basketball and track.

He was drafted into the Army his senior year and served after graduation.

In September of 1949 he married his high school sweetheart Arlene (Lukes) from Hoquiam and they were members of OLGH Church. In 1949 Steve joined the Marine Reserves and served in Korea Company B where he was one of the Chosin Few and was awarded a Purple Heart. He was an active member of the Marine Corps League.

After returning from Korea their first son John was born and three years later daughter Janet.

He enjoyed fishing and hunting with his father-in-law and son, bowling, golf, playing pinnacle and attending high school and college basketball and football games. He was a longtime member of the Hoquiam Elks and the second longest member of the Hoquiam Lions. The family spent summers at their cabin in Tokeland with lifelong family friends.

He retired from Ferrellgas Co. at age 55. After retirement Steve and Arlene purchased a trailer and loved to travel with their RV clubs. Steve acquired a few nicknames from his daughter’s high school friends: “Cookie Monster,” “Patton” and “Papa” to his great-granddaughter but later in life referred to himself as “Joe Blow from Kokomo.”

Steve is survived by his loving wife Arlene of 73 years, son John (wife Darla Haek), daughter Janet Pellegrini (partner Milt Sousanis); grandson, James and great-granddaughter Maddy. He was preceded in death by his mother, father, sister Mary (Mimi) and grandson Brendon.

A service and celebration of life will be held at a later time.

The family would also like to thank his caregiver and now friend Stephanie. In leu of flowers the family has asked for donations to your favorite charity.
