On Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2021, Steve D. Mitchell, age 73, passed away at Virginia Mason Hospital.
He was born in Aberdeen on Dec. 18, 1947, to Zane and Peggy Mitchell (Ashlock). He graduated with the class of 1966 from Weatherwax High School, then attended Grays Harbor College.
He worked at Swansons all through high school, then joined the U.S. Airforce. After the Airforce he drove his motorcycle to Kansas where he became a QuikTrip manager.
When he returned to Washington he began his career as a firefighter, working his way up through the ranks. He retired as the Fire Chief after 26 years of service, following in the footsteps of his dad, Zane Mitchell ( Aberdeen Fire Chief); and uncle Kenneth Mitchell and cousin Lance Talley (both Hoquiam Fire Chiefs).
He loved the fire service and enjoyed jokes and pranks with fellow firefighters.
He was well known for his honesty.
He was a member of the Aberdeen Eagles and the American Legion.
He grew up hunting, fishing and camping with his parents and sister. He also enjoyed trips to Reno.
After retiring, Steve and Sally bought a motorhome and toured the United States for three months. He enjoyed gardening and had a great time making greeting cards for family and friends. He also sang karaoke at home and recorded many CDs that he shared with family and friends. He enjoyed playing pool and was a member of the Grays Harbor Senior Pool League for over 20 years.
Steve married Sally (Burruss) in April 1998. Sally survives him at the family home. He is also survived by his mother Peggy Mitchell and sister Shari (John) Horvath, both of Texas; a daughter Kasey (Josh) Deis, grandchildren Malea and Rowan of California; and a son Ryan Mitchell of Oregon.
With the blending of the two families, they enjoyed five children and five grandchildren. Steve also leaves behind nieces, nephews and many cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father Zane Mitchell.
Due to Covid, a celebration of life will be held when it is once again safe to travel and gather.
