Sophie Gudyka

Sophie Gudyka 96, a long time Raymond resident and a Holocaust Survivor (she was featured in The Daily World Profile in the 01/04/2009 paper) was born Jan. 8, 1922, in Wietlin, Jaroslaw, Poland to John and Eva (Bohacz) Stachnik and came to the United States in November of 1951 and to Pacific County in 1952.

Sophie Gudyka 96, a long time Raymond resident and a Holocaust Survivor (she was featured in The Daily World Profile in the 01/04/2009 paper) was born Jan. 8, 1922, in Wietlin, Jaroslaw, Poland to John and Eva (Bohacz) Stachnik and came to the United States in November of 1951 and to Pacific County in 1952. She was married to Frank Gudyka on Feb. 11, 1950, in Germany. He died in June of 1992.

Sophie was a member of the Catholic Church. She enjoyed gardening, veggies and flowers, crocheting, knitting and all needlework and had won many blue ribbons for her work at the Pacific County Fair.

She is survived by three daughters, Stacia Smith of Maryland, Helen Fajardo of Georgia and Barbara Sadler of California; son Bruno Gudyka; a brother in Poland; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She also had a son Johnny who was killed in a logging accident at the age of 27.

A funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Monday, March 5, at the St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Raymond. Burial will follow beside her husband and son at the Menlo Cemetery.
