Sidney Charles Johnson

Sidney Charles Johnson was born to Opal Hall and Russell Johnson at home in Crandon, Wisconsin on July 12, 1936. After the death of his father when he was 10, Sid started working several miscellaneous jobs to help support the family. He attended school in Crandon, Wisconsin, and Olive Hill, Kentucky.

In March of 1954, at the age of 17, Sid joined the Army. He went to basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, was stationed in Korea during the end of the Korean War, and finished the rest of his duty at Fort Lewis. He was honorably discharged from the Army in March of 1957.

After his service, Sid returned to Harshaw, Wisconsin, and worked on the farm with his mother and stepfather Forest “Bud” Bathe. He also worked at Atlas Plywood, Solar Permanent, and Tomahawk Sand and Gravel. Sid married the love of his life Janet Mayr on June 1, 1963, and they lived in Harshaw, Wisconsin with their son Victor and daughter Tove.

Sid and his family moved to Aberdeen, Washington in August of 1965 and then Wishkah in 1966. Sid worked for Greystone Corporation and then Cascade Materials where he retired in September of 1990. After retirement, Sid and Jan ran an in-home daycare for 18 years. During this time they helped raise many kids and became a pivotal part of the Wishkah community.

Sid was a charismatic man that never met a stranger in his life. He could talk the ear off anyone and would remember people/dates spanning 60-plus years. Prior to his illness, Sid would make weekly phone calls to family and friends all over the country to keep in touch and chat. He was an original member of the Wishkah Winos and enjoyed attending the annual baseball game. Sid’s favorite pastimes included mowing the lawn with his Snapper lawn mower, hunting, gardening, making homemade wine, feeding the community, listening to the scanner, hillbilly music, making bets with his nephew Richard Bond and chatting with people.

He passed the night of April 27 at home with his wife and daughter by his side. He is survived by his wife Janet, daughter Tove Reibel (Dave), daughter-in-law Mimi Pizzo, brother George Johnson (Janice), grandchildren Victor Dalgord (Erin), Shelby Reibel, Courtney Shipp (Andy) and Trey Berge, great-grandchildren Kaylie Kummer, Peyton Dalgord, Jacob Dalgord, Tayven Shipp and Saige Shipp, numerous nieces and nephews, and surrogate grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son Victor Dalgord, father Russell Johnson, mother Opal Bathe, stepfather Bud Bathe, his siblings Anne Bond (Leroy), Edna Mae Boggs (Doug), Billie Jean Smith (Eugene), Clyde Johnson (Josephine), Robert Johnson, Lois Marie Johnson, and Jim Johnson.

A celebration of Sid’s life will be at a later date and time. In lieu of flowers and gifts, please make a donation in his name to the Wishkah Valley Volunteer Fire Department.
