Robert Douglas “Bob” Shortt was welcomed to his heavenly home on Thursday, Aug. 19, 2021, just four days after his 86th birthday. Bob was born in Seattle to Hugh Melville and Florence Shortt. He graduated from Lincoln High School in 1953, attended the University of Washington and graduated with his master’s degree from Central Washington College of Education — now Central Washington University.

Bob’s Army service included a year in Paris as a cryptographer with NATO. When Bob returned to his beloved Northwest, he took a “short term” position with the Aberdeen School District, teaching high school classes in history, economics, and world problems.

Former students often comment about his history stories and about how easy it was to get him talking about his airplanes and Volkswagens instead of the day’s topic. His years of teaching led to him being a member of the Aberdeen City Council for 12 years. He focused his after-school days on his VW repair shop, for which he was well-known on the Harbor. Bob finished his 36-year teaching career at the Miller Junior High School in 2000.

Bob is survived by his wife, Margo; daughters, Laurie and Robyn; sister, Bonnie; four step-children; grandchildren: Courtney, Beau and David; step-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers William and Hugh and former wife, Dolores.

A gathering to celebrate Bob’s life will be held at a later date.

One of Bob’s favorite charities was the Christian Cable Ministries Channel 20, 601 W Heron Street, Aberdeen, WA 98520.

Cremation arrangements are by Coleman Mortuary in Hoquiam.
