Norman Virgil Kain, a longtime Harbor resident passed away on May 12, 2022 from a stroke. He was 92 years old.

Norm was born January 28, 1930, to Cora Belle Dolan and Joseph Vincent Kain.

The Kain family were one of the first settlers to live in Willapa Valley in Raymond, Washington. Norm was the youngest of four children. He grew up in Willapa and attended Willapa Valley High school where he was an outstanding athlete who excelled in both football and basketball. He graduated from Willapa Valley High School and was awarded two scholarships for basketball to Oregon State University.

Norm served in the Marine Corps for four years. While in the Marine Corps he was a Golden Glove boxer. In 1954, he married Mardelle Kok from Cosmopolis. They had six children.

Norm worked until his retirement for the IWU/PMA as a longshoreman. He was a maritime foreman and walking boss who oversaw the operations of the longshore workers on the terminal Local 24, in Hoquiam, Washington. Prior to longshoring he worked as a logger/boom tender who worked on the water at the Hoquiam site.

He was an avid fisherman and hunter who loved the outdoors. He fished for a while commercially as well. Norm always loved sports and played basketball well into his late 60s for the team, Mardi’s Crafts. He was also an avid Seahawks fan who never missed a game. Norm was outgoing, social and friendly. He had numerous friends and was always willing to help anyone in need.

Norm is preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Mardelle Kain; his son Kevin Kain, his brother Bob Kain, his sister Betty Jennings, his sister Evelyn and his grandson Tyler Barton.

­­He is survived by his daughters Marda Barton (Brent) of Bellevue, Washington; Valenda Fjeld (Wayne) of Aberdeen and Karessa Kain of Aberdeen.

He is also survived by his two sons Norlan Kain (Vicky) of Aberdeen and Vance Kain (Marla) of Austin, Texas, eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.

Services will be private at the family’s request and burial will be at Menlo Park, Washington.
