Mary Elizabeth Speer, a resident of Aberdeen, Washington died on May 29, 2022, at her home. She is loved dearly by her family and friends and is sorely missed. She was one of the loveliest people most of us have ever met. Mrs. Speer was born on June 19, 1926, in Longview, Washington to Alfred and Elizabeth Anderson. She grew up in Kelso.

She married Doran R. Speer Jr., “Bob” on April 17, 1947, in Longview. Mr. Speer’s career in the Air Force, took them all over the world. Mary especially enjoyed living in Japan and Hawaii. The couple retired to several different places; first in Half Moon Bay, California, then San Jose, California and finally in Olympia, Washington. Bob died in Olympia on July 1, 1997, and Mary moved to Aberdeen in 2004 to be closer to one of her daughters.

Mary enjoyed living in Aberdeen where she found a welcoming, thriving bridge community. She made many friends and had countless days at her favorite sport, bridge playing. She was a longtime member of St. Andrew Episcopal Church and is remembered for her gardening, baking and the best tea parties.

Surviving relatives include two daughters, Lynne Schmidtke of Aberdeen and Shelley Clark of Lopez Island; eight grandchildren: Christian Schmidtke, Eva Schmidtke, Marly Schmidtke, Erich Schmidtke; Gabriel Calderon, Jackson Bailey, Alexander Clark and Carly Clark; and three great-grandchildren: Kyla Calderon, Arete Calderon and Bayler Clark. Her brother, Raymond Anderson, of Maple Ridge B.C. died previously.

A gathering of family and friends will be held later.
