Marilyn Kay Shumate of Rochester passed away Monday, Sept. 6, 2021, at Providence St Peter Hospital.

Marilyn Kay Shumate of Rochester passed away Monday, Sept. 6, 2021, at Providence St Peter Hospital. She was 85.

Marilyn was born on Aug. 9, 1936, to Wilbur and Adelaide (Baker) O’Neall in Bellingham, Washington where she graduated in 1955. Then on one beautiful day in Coos Bay, Oregon Marilyn married William Erick Shumate. William proceeded her in death on Aug. 20, 2021.

She is survived by her children: Ernest Shumate of Hoquiam, Richard Shumate of Benton City, Tammy Shumate of Rochester and Karalee Skye of Rochester; sister Judy (Vic) Rogers of Coos Bay, Oregon; half-sister Joyce Carey of Bellingham; 18 grandchildren and 44 great-grandchildren. Her half-brother Bill Carey proceeded her in death.

In 1989, Marilyn opened Destinations Unlimited Travel Service in Tumwater, Washington. She later retired in 2003. At that time Marilyn and William loaded up their RV and traveled all over the USA. They loved all their adventures together and were always eager to plan the next trip.

Marilyn enjoyed spending time with her loving husband and family during retirement. She could often be found in the garden, painting ceramics,and planning the next trip to play bingo. She was a collector of bells and cat figurines.

Graveside services with military honors for Marilyn and William will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 16, 2021 at Elma Masonic Cemetery. A get-together at Tammy’s Ceramic Shop in Rochester will immediately follow.
