Margaret Nettie Carlson, a longtime resident of the Harbor, died at Pacific Care Center, Hoquiam, Saturday, March 17, 2018. She was 93. Margaret was born in Ettrick, Wis., the daughter of Bennie and Helen (Dettinger) Johnson. She attended schools there until the 11th grade when she had to leave school to take care of her mother, sisters and brothers.

She met Philip A. Carlson and was married Jan. 31, 1943, in Wisconsin. They moved to Aberdeen in 1947 and she was a cashier and cook at Wahl’s Candy Store which also had a small restaurant. She loved working with Earl and Casey Thagason at the store.

She worked at the store until she had a son, Kim, and they moved to Central Park in 1953. Along with her husband, they started Phil Carlson Lumber Sales. She kept very busy with bookkeeping, rental properties and would find time for flowers and gardening in her yard.

In 1980 Phil suffered a stroke and she took care of him and the lumber yard. They closed the lumber yard in 1981, but she continued with the rental properties with her son, Kim, until 2012 when she was no longer able to take care of them. Phil passed away in 1990.

In 2012 having health problems of her own, she came to live at Pacific Care Center. This year on Feb. 14, Margaret was crowned Valentine’s Day Queen at the care center.

Margaret is survived by her son and wife, Kim and Melain Carlson, Central Park; a grandson, Erik Carlson, Olympia; two sisters: Mary Nordby of Wisconsin and Donna and husband Kenny Greeno, Columbia Heights, Minn.; and also numerous nieces and nephews.

A private entombment will be held at the Colonnades of Fern Hill Cemetery, Aberdeen.
