Judith Carnino Vaughan passed away at her home on Feb. 14, 2019. She was born July 27, 1927, in Renton, Washington, to her parents, Tersilla and Louis Carnino. She grew up in Black Diamond, Washington. She attended grammar school in Black Diamond and high school at Holy Names Academy in Seattle, graduating in 1945. She was a successful business woman, working in the Seattle and San Francisco areas. In 1968 she decided to change careers and become a teacher. She earned an Associate of Arts degree at Grays Harbor College, then earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the University of Hawaii. She did her doctoral studies at Claremont College in California. In 1990, she moved to Grays Harbor, where she taught English, literature and humanities at Grays Harbor College until her retirement in 2011.

Judith was a beautiful and loving person who was deeply devoted to her Catholic faith, her family and her students. She is survived by her brother, Barney Carnino, nieces Judy Byron OP, Diane Henry, Chris Backlund, Jacqueline Byron, Kathleen Byron, Jean Winkel, Joan Broughton, Lori Carnino, Carolyn Carnino, Kathy Carnino, and Cheri Rink; nephews Bob Byron, Pat Byron, Barney Carnino Jr., and Paul Carnino. She was preceded in death by her sister Mary Byron, brothers Angelo Carnino and John Carnino; nephews Michael Byron, Jim Carnino, and John Carnino.

A funeral Mass for Judith was celebrated on Feb. 21, 2019, at St. Barbara Catholic Church in Black Diamond. She was buried in the Black Diamond cemetery next to her beloved parents.

Friends, former colleagues and students are invited to a luncheon reception in memory of Judith on Sunday, March 31, at 12 p.m. at the Our Lady of Good Help Church Parish Hall, located at the corner of 2nd and M Streets in Hoquiam.
