He was born in Aberdeen, Washington, on April 11, 1942, to Joseph and Irma Rosmaryn (Niemi).

John graduated from Weatherwax High School in Aberdeen (1960). He continued his education at Central Washington University (CWU), where he met the love of his life, Colleen.

The year 1966 was a monumental year for John. He graduated from CWU, married Colleen, and began his career as an elementary school teacher with Tacoma Public Schools.

John and Colleen built a beautiful life together, raising four children: Steven, Susan, Sandra, and Elizabeth.

John became the first in his family to complete a Master’s degree (CWU ‘74). His career evolved from the classroom to school administration. He was a pioneer in integrating computers into the classrooms. He retired from Tacoma Public Schools in 1997 as the Director of Math, Science, and Instructional Technology.

Never ones to slow down, John and Colleen spent two adventurous years in Lagos, Nigeria, where John taught computer technology at the American International School of Lagos before fully retiring in 1999.

Throughout their life together, John and Colleen traveled the world, visiting countries including France, Germany, Russia, Ireland, Egypt, Singapore, and Korea, among others. These journeys reflected John’s boundless curiosity and joy for learning and discovery.

John’s greatest pride was his family. His and Colleen’s children, including their daughter and sons-in-law, and beloved grandchildren brought him endless joy.

John was preceded in death by his parents and elder sister, Joanne Browning.
