John Calvin Mainio Jr., 80, passed away on Jan. 23, 2023. due to complications of pneumonia.

John Calvin Mainio Jr., 80, passed away on Jan. 23, 2023. due to complications of pneumonia.

John was born on Dec. 17, 1942, to John and Margaret Mainio in Aberdeen Washington, where he resided the majority of his life.

John graduated from Aberdeen High School in 1961 and attended Saint Martin’s University, receiving his bachelor’s degree in education in 1966. He went on to join the Peace Corps where he taught and served underprivileged children in Brazil from 1966 to 1968.

Upon his return, he married Sherry Asikainen in 1969. John received his Master’s in Education from Central Washington University in 1971 and began his teaching career in the Aberdeen School District. John retired as an elementary school teacher from the Aberdeen School District in 2000 after 31 years.

Upon his retirement, he started working at the Stafford Creek Correctional Facility overseeing the kitchen staff. When John retired from Stafford Creek in 2013, he moved to Olympia, where he lived for the remainder of his life. John was a man of faith who attended church regularly.

John loved to travel, especially with his kids and grandkids, and spend time visiting with family and friends. He enjoyed coaching; helping with his kids’ baseball and fastpitch teams, as well as coaching elementary school basketball, Little League and football. He had a love for cooking and even took a year sabbatical in 1987 to attend Culinary School in Portland.

John put on the persona that he was a stern man, but he was humorous, kind-hearted, and loving and would do anything to help someone. John is survived by his two children, John Mainio IV and Mary Mainio, his three grandchildren: Anthony, Abby and Jaylee, his great-grandson, Kayden, as well as his brother Bill (Susan) Mainio, his niece, Michelle (Adam) Laukkenen and his nephew Eric (Nicole) Mainio. He was preceded in death by his father John C. Mainio Sr. and his mother Margaret (Dougherty) Mainio. A service for John will be held at Saint Mary Catholic Church on March 10, 2023, at 11 a.m. followed by a reception in the Parish Hall.
