Joanne Marie Shay, 88, lifelong Harborite and homemaker, passed away on Friday, Feb. 12, 2021, at her home in Aberdeen.
Joanne was born on April 28, 1932, in Hoquiam, Washington, to John and Vienna (Rippa) Strom. She graduated from Hoquiam High School in 1950 and went to work at the Old Community Hospital as a “Candy Striper.”
On Aug. 18, 1952, Joanne married Donald Wayne Shay at the Hoquiam First Baptist Church. Don passed away on Sept. 21, 2015.
Joanne was a homemaker taking care of her family. She enjoyed baking and being with her family. She also liked to feed the birds.
Joanne has five children: Diane (Lonnie) Waterbury of Montesano, Donna Shay of Aberdeen, Mary (Roger) Burton of Hoquiam, Pam McGiveron of Aberdeen and David (Connie) Shay of Cosmopolis; two sisters: Barbara (Doug) Baker of Pennsylvania and Kay Edgbert of Olympia; four grandkids, four great-grandkids, her cat Maya, and a son from another mother, Ted Rich of Arizona. She had a brother Jack Strom who preceded her in death.
There will be a graveside service for Joanne on Monday, Feb. 22, at 1 p.m. at Fern Hill Cemetery, Aberdeen, Washington. A celebration of life will follow at the Aberdeen Elks Lodge at 2 p.m.
Burial arrangements are entrusted to Twibell’s Fern Hill Funeral Home in Aberdeen, Washington.
