Jerry Lee Layman, known by his friend’s and family as Papa, Daddy or Willapa Bear, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, March 6, 2019, in Aberdeen, Washington. Jerry was 69 years old and from Raymond, Washington.
Jerry was from the baby-boomer generation. He was born May 3, 1949, in Morton, Washington, after his dad returned from serving in the Army during WWII, to Coya E. and Edith M. Layman. Jerry spent his childhood in Morton with his big brother Chester “Chet” Layman and wonderful sister Shirley.

Jerry married his best friend Corean on Nov. 22, 1969, in Cle Elum, Washington, and began his love story with her back in Raymond. Around 1973, Jerry began volunteering with the Pacific County Sheriff’s Office as a reserve deputy. The volunteer position became a career when Jerry started with the Raymond Police Department and quickly promoted to patrol sergeant. While serving with RPD, Jerry also served as an apprehension K9 handler with his partner, “Sarg.” In the early 1980s, Jerry lateraled to the Pacific County Sheriff’s Office, where he finished his career in 1993 due to a medical disability.
Shooting sports have always been a hobby for Jerry. Shooting .22 rifles with Joey and Dicky in high school out at the dump was just the beginning. Throughout Jerry’s law enforcement career, Jerry served as a pistol and rifle instructor and loved imparting the knowledge and skills necessary for law enforcement officers to serve and survive. For many years after retirement, Jerry continued teaching various agencies in the area and shooting for sport with his family.
When not playing with guns, Jerry enjoyed creating in his woodshop. Many bowls, pens, boxes and other beautiful items were created and given away over the years. Jerry enjoyed riding horses and motorcycles and loved “Jeeping” with his family, exploring the beautiful wilderness that we have around us. He usually had a boxer dog with him while out and about.
Jerry loved the Lord and was always active in his church, serving wherever he could. He had a unique sense of humor that those who knew him cherished.
