Jerome “Pete” Anderson, 81, passed away peacefully in Hoquiam on Nov. 3, 2020, with his wife Marie by his bedside. Pete was born Dec. 13,1938, to Harry C. and Mary L. (Haggerty) Anderson in Britton, South Dakota. The family moved to Hoquiam when he was a young boy, and he attended grade school at St. Mary’s Catholic School, graduating from Hoquiam High School in 1957.
On June 14, 1958, Pete married Marie Stillwell. She was the love of his life. They have two sons, Dennis (Loy) of Houston and Doyle of Tacoma; and a daughter Denise, of Hoquiam.
Pete worked for a time at the Chair Factory assembling wood furniture, got hired on as a diesel mechanic for the Port of Grays Harbor, then became a proud union longshoreman with the ILWU No. 24 in Hoquiam. He retired after 31 years on the docks.
Pete was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing and clam digging. He loved taking vacations to Oregon and Yellowstone National Park with family and friends, and always looked forward to family reunions. Pete and Marie owned race horses for several years and the family would spend summer weekends at race tracks and fair grounds in Washington, Oregon and Idaho. After he retired, Pete enjoyed spending time with Marie doing woodworking and making crafts, traveling, golfing, spending time with his grandkids and watching them play sports. He was an avid reader, his favorite books being Louis L’Amour westerns of which he probably read and reread every one that was ever written. He was well-known for the warhead candies he carried and handed out freely to family, friends and strangers.
Besides his wife and children, Pete is survived by seven grandsons, three great-granddaughters, his brothers, Joe of Spokane and Jim (Fifi) of Corvallis, Oregon; a sister Jill (Steve) Hulbert of Olympia, several cousins; numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives.
Pete was preceded in death by an infant brother, a brother John “Jack” who was a Navy veteran; his mother Mary, and his father, Harry.
Pete was a wonderful family man who was much loved and will be greatly missed by many. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
