On Sunday, March 22, 2020, James I. Kalkwarf, of Aberdeen, peacefully passed away at home surrounded by family after a 26-year health challenge stemming from cancer. He was 76.

Jim was born in Seattle, Washington on July 3, 1943, to Art and Gwen Kalkwarf. He grew up in Aberdeen and graduated from Weatherwax High School in 1961. He graduated from Central Washington University with a degree in Philosophy, which contributed to his love of storytelling. He married Cecile Ivey in 1966 and was blessed with three children, Katherine, Kristine and Joe. They later divorced and remained friends. In March 1983, Jim married Vera Adderley and was blessed with two more daughters, Morgan and Kelsey.

As a young man Jim enjoyed working in his uncle’s apple orchard in Wenatchee, Washington. He later dedicated his life to helping people become successfully employed, retiring after 26 years from the Washington State Department of Employment Security. He was a lifelong member of Calvary Lutheran Church in Aberdeen where he also served as an Elder.

Second to his family and the Lord, Jim loved the outdoors; hunting, fishing, hiking and clam digging. He was an avid tennis, baseball and basketball fan, playing and watching the sport. His love of reading and music enriched his life, bringing great joy and many friendships. He was happiest when sharing those joys. Jim was generously blessed by many lifelong friends with whom he shared stories, laughs and love throughout all of his days.

He is survived by his wife, Vera, and daughters, Katherine (Wesley) Meyer, Kristine Kalkwarf, Morgan (Jeff) Klingensmith, Kelsey (Joel) Rodriquez; son Joseph Kalkwarf; brother Tom Kalkwarf; four grandchildren, Henry and Herman Meyer and Camdan and Kingsley Kalkwarf; two cousins and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at a later date in Aberdeen, Washington. Until then, Jim would encourage everyone to read, listen to music and get outside.
