Hilda Sofia (Kallio) Cournoyer, 98, was born Aug. 6, 1922, to Finnish immigrants Jack E. and Anna S. (Hatinen) Kallio and passed away on Dec. 2, 2020, in Tumwater, Washington.
Hilda grew up on the family ranch on the Humptulips River. She attended grade school at Axford Prairie, Washington, graduated from Hoquiam High School in 1939 and Grays Harbor Business College in 1940.
She served in the Women’s Army Corps during World War II, trained at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia and was stationed at Madigan Hospital, Fort Lewis, Washington.
Hilda married Robert (Bob) C. Cournoyer, June 15, 1947, at Saran Lutheran Church, Hoquiam Washington. They were married 24 years before his death on April 9, 1972.
She was employed as a secretary at Rainier National Bank, Aberdeen, Washington from April 1967 until she retired in August 1986.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Carl Kallio and sister Anita Jahn.
Hilda is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Kristine Cournoyer, University Place, Washington; her daughter and son-in law, Anne and Bill Ford, Tumwater, Washington; grandsons Keith (Heather) Cournoyer, Marysville, Washington and Sean (Janel) Cournoyer, Bonney Lake, Washington; six great-grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews throughout the United States and cousins in Finland.
The family would like to thank the staff at The Hampton in Tumwater for their compassion and care of Mom over the last 4 1/2 years.
A private burial will take place at Sunset Memorial Park in Hoquiam, Washington next to her husband Bob.
Burial arrangements are entrusted to Twibell’s Fern Hill Funeral Home in Aberdeen, Washington.
