Erna Josephine Bessey

Erna Josephine Bessey passed away on Jan. 29, 2022 after a valiant battle to recover from a broken hip. She remained alert, optimistic and cheerful to the end.

Born on Nov. 22, 1925, Erna and her husband Jim Bessey moved to Washington in 1949 where they raised four children.

Erna was office manager for the Olympia Salvation Army which she admired for helping people in need.

Erna and her husband spent many years of their retirement in Grayland, Washington where they hosted unforgettable summers at “San -D-Lot” with friends and family.

She was politically astute and had a fierce heart for love and justice. She lived a life full of adventure bringing back stories from around the world and welcoming people of many backgrounds into her home. She was an avid and skilled bridge player, a magician in the sewing world, fond of historical fiction and a remarkable cook who loved setting a beautiful table. Most of all, Erna loved gatherings with her family and many dear friends.

Erna is survived by her four children, 10 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Though she is gone in body, she is everywhere in spirit and the people she has touched.

A celebration of life will be scheduled in the future to accommodate Erna’s preference for warm sunny weather. Donations can be made in Erna’s name to the Olympia Salvation Army.
