On Thursday, Sept. 15, 2016, Dorothy Meranda Lund entered the Kingdom of Heaven.

Dorothy was born on June 28, 1922, to Clarence and Mabel (Toso) Stenson in Baker, N.D. She was the second of seven children. Raised during the Great Depression, she left school to help provide for the family by cleaning houses.

Dorothy married Verne S. Lund on Jan. 18, 1940, in Minot, N.D. Their first child, Anthony Verne Lund, was born in Minot, N.D. They moved to Los Angeles, where their second child, Gary Curtis Lund was born. Verne Lund enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1942, and while he was serving his enlistment, Dorothy worked as a “Rosie the Riveter” for Hughes Aircraft. After the war, the family moved to Seattle where their third child, Deborah Irene Lund, was born. Verne, Dorothy and Debbie moved to Santa Maria, Calif. in 1960 where their fourth child, Michael Allen Lund was born. The family moved to Las Vegas, Nev. in 1965 where Dorothy worked as a waitress at the Orbit Inn, and then as a culinary expediter at the Hacienda Hotel. In 1975, the family moved to Axford Prairie and later to Hoquiam where Dorothy resided for 32 years.

During her time in Grays Harbor, Dorothy worked at the Red Rooster, the Aberdeen Elks Club and Sears. She loved to garden, work around her home, visit the casinos, and go to Reno whenever she got the opportunity. She was one of the “Greatest Generation”, and she embodied that spirit with the belief that hard work could conquer difficult challenges. She had great compassion and empathy for all people. Her family was the central part of her life, and her most enjoyable times were those spent with them.

Dorothy is survived by her son, Michael (Tammy) Lund; her daughter, Debbie Sandoval; her brother, Vernell Stenson (Phyllis); her sisters, Iris Harmon and Norma Forsman; ten grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild, two daughters-in-law, Bernice and Esmeralda and other relatives.

Dorothy was presided in death by her husband, Verne and her sons, Anthony and Gary.

The family would like to thank the caregivers and nurses at Montesano Health and Rehab for their outstanding care, and would also like to recognize the special attention and love provided by Kurina Bradshaw, Dorothy’s “angel” for the past six years.
